EDUCATION NEWS

  • At an Anderson board meeting, three members approved two new football coaches while delaying a vote on West Valley High School's varsity volleyball coach amid conflict-of-interest concerns — the board will reconvene with a full panel to revisit the decision.  Action News Now
  • Redding leaders, including Simpson University President Dr. Norman Hall and Council member Paul DiNuca, visited Pikeville, Kentucky to study a successful medical training program. They will gather support letters and work with experts to plan a new medical school that could boost local health services and the economy.  KRCR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cal Fire Shasta-Trinity Unit is training seasonal staff ahead of peak fire season by practicing firefighting, EMS skills, and fuels treatment at local sessions. Battalion Chief Matt Alexander said the hands-on training will speed emergency response and help reduce property fire hazards.  KRCR
  • Redding Police Officer Tyler Spurgeon explained the hands-free phone rules during Traffic Tuesday on Action News Now. A wind advisory is in effect today from 5 AM to 11 PM in the Sacramento Valley and Carquinez Strait (gusts up to 40 mph may affect driving).  Action News Now
  • GEO Reentry Services will host an open house Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1415 Court Street to celebrate 13 years at its day reporting center that helps probationers with treatment, skill building and monitoring.  KQMS
  • Redding Electric Utility announced major repairs today to keep power on as triple-digit temperatures are expected — the project is designed to strengthen the grid in anticipation of summer heat.  Action News Now

  • Demolition of the former Bert and Ernie's bar started Wednesday, April 15 after 14 years of neglect, as the Shasta Association of Realtors prepares to convert the property into a parking lot (they bought it for $60,100). SPORTS NEWS

  • IRONMAN 70.3 will take place in Redding this summer as Tom Cotton (operations manager for IRONMAN Northwest) explained why the city was chosen for its inaugural event. Athletes across the region can prepare for a challenging race.  Record Searchlight
  • In Red Bluff, the 105th Round-Up started its slack competition on Wednesday with team roping, tie-down roping and steer wrestling as cowboys recorded times from 4.7 to 9.6 seconds — today breakaway roping and second rounds are scheduled, with the top 24 advancing for contests on April 17 and 18.  Action News Now
