COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Flooding that began on Dec. 21 forced some Shasta residents to leave their homes while Red Cross teams and city staff assess damage in Redding. A multi-agency support event is scheduled from Jan. 2-4 at the Northern Valley Catholic Social Services building to help those affected.  ShastaScout
  • GoFundMe pages have been verified to help local families recover from December floods that caused heavy damage to homes and belongings. The pages offer a way for community members to donate and support those facing a long road to rebuilding.  KQMS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Redding Area Bus Authority announced it will use a B20 biodiesel mix on its 16-bus fleet in Shasta County to cut emissions while keeping service unchanged. The agency plans to monitor performance and explore additional renewable fuel opportunities in the future.  Record Searchlight
  • On Dec. 30, a San Francisco-bound flight left just before fog set in and Redding's airport reported visibility dropping to half a mile, which is below landing minimums (passengers were advised to check with airlines).  Action News Now
  • California Department of Fish and Wildlife will use helicopters in January 2026 to capture deer, elk, and wolves for GPS collaring in parts of Tehama, Modoc, Siskiyou, and Lassen counties — additional wolf packs may be caught in Modoc, Shasta and Plumas counties and returned to public lands.  Action News Now
  • A 50-year winter storm struck Redding on Dec.21, causing flooding and about 60 water-related rescues by emergency crews. Crews worked overnight and over the holiday to clear debris and protect infrastructure.  KRCR
  • Shasta Sustainable Resource Management in Anderson offers an eco-friendly way to dispose of bare Christmas trees by chipping them for clean energy sold to PG&E. Residents can drop off trees free of charge (8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily).  KRCR
  • Residents can recycle their Christmas tree for renewable energy at the Anderson plant. The project, announced recently, will convert organic waste into power + cut down on local waste.  Action News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City crews & emergency officials carried out 60 water rescues after a Dec. 21 storm caused heavy rainfall and localized flooding; the city is now assessing damage and urging residents to report issues online.  Action News Now
  • Assembly Bill 1374 will require rental companies and third parties to disclose all charges, including taxes and fees, and indicate if a vehicle is gas- or electric-powered, with the law going into effect tomorrow to improve online transparency.  Action News Now

  • UPrep Panthers won in the Jamie Angley Basketball Tournament on Dec. 30 at Enterprise High School. The team built a 15-point lead in the fourth quarter & Trey Pringle played a key role while forcing Eureka Loggers to work harder on offense & defense.  Action News Now
