- ➤ Redding is partnering with California Soccer Park to reopen a new gastropub called The Black Sheep at the former Big League Dreams sports park on Viking Way. The restaurant will open in January or February to serve families and couples on game days and off. Record Searchlight
- ➤ MONCA is hosting a Community Gingerbread House Contest and Showcase from Dec. 5 to Dec. 19. Local residents can admire creative gingerbread designs at the museum—Action News Now detailed the upcoming contest. Action News Now
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Regional health and education leaders formed the Rural Northern California Medical Education Consortium to plan a new medical school serving 17 counties and address provider shortages in rural & tribal communities. Project leaders will seek federal grants and build the institution over 7 to 10 years. KRCR
- ➤ Camp Cinder is accepting applications from young women aged 15 to 17 for a four-day firefighting camp in Redding — June 22 to 25, 2026 — with about 30 spots available for training in wildland, structure and water rescues, CPR and vehicle extrication. KRCR
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The U.S. Forest Service began a prescribed burn on Dec. 8 in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, burning 25 acres in Weaverville near Mariner's Roost and Captains Point campgrounds on Trinity Lake (an effort to manage forest health). Action News Now
- ➤ Shasta-Trinity National Forest officials have banned transporting golden, zebra, and quagga mussels on five lakes (effective Dec. 4 through Dec. 4, 2027) to protect local ecosystems and infrastructure. Violators may face fines or jail time. ShastaScout

- ➤ On Dec. 8, a town hall meeting on Shasta County's mental health campus proposal took place. Local officials + community members shared feedback that may shape future plans. Action News Now
- ➤ The Shasta Lake veterans village project was cancelled after the city terminated its agreement on Dec. 2 due to a $4 million funding gap (the city forgave a $100K loan to clear the title). - ➤ Local post offices are running long lines as residents use prepaid labels to drop off holiday packages quickly. The Postal Service advises shipping early to avoid delays, with today as the cutoff for international and military mail and upcoming deadlines for express and priority deliveries. KRCR
