COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Good News Rescue Mission will host its annual Great Thanksgiving Banquet on November 26 at Veda Street with seatings at 11 a.m., 12 p.m., 4 p.m., 5 p.m., and 6 p.m. The event (200 volunteers are expected to serve over 800 meals) will also include a coat closet opening at 9 a.m. (offering free winter coats to those in need).  Action News Now
  • A local charity led by Gayle Adelman will deliver Christmas gifts to over 350 seniors and other residents in long-term care facilities on December 23—this year, Fleet Feet hosts the donation tree that matches each resident's gift wish.  Record Searchlight
  • The Community Foundation of the North State’s Critical Response Fund — set up to help residents during the federal shutdown — awarded its first grants to nonprofits in Shasta, Siskiyou and Tehama counties to support food, housing and utility needs. Mercy Foundation North received $10,000 for food distribution — about $27,000 went to nonprofits in Siskiyou County — and more funds will be awarded in December.  ShastaScout
  • The Community Foundation of the North State awarded grants from its Critical Response Funds to local nonprofits to help households facing food insecurity and bill payment issues due to the extended federal shutdown — Mercy Foundation North received $10,000 for food distribution while other Siskiyou County groups received about $27,000 in total.   • Reporters visited the new Redding Public Market in downtown before its soft open today—taking a quick look at its setup as vendors get ready to serve the community.  Record Searchlight
  • Four local stores will offer ready-to-go Thanksgiving meals for order or pickup this holiday season—Safeway, Sprouts, Costco, and Trader Joe's each feature meal deals with unique ordering deadlines and hours to suit different needs. CULTURE NEWS

  • Redding Garden of Lights, voted last year as one of USA Today's best holiday displays — its organizers hope to keep the spot — invites local fans to vote until December 1. The event at McConnell Arboretum and Gardens will display over 2 million lights on select nights until January 4.  KQMS
  • The Sunday before Thanksgiving, Redding hosted its annual Thanksgiving Interfaith Service organized by Shasta Interfaith at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on Churn Creek Road. The service featured prayers from over 20 faith communities including Buddhist, Sikh, Baha'i, Native American, Jewish and various Christian groups— a longtime tradition that ended with choirs and shared cookies.  KRCR

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Data from Zumper shows that apartment rents in Redding increased 7% from last year's median of $1,395—reaching a typical listing of $1,495 in October. The analysis also noted a 3% rise from last month's prices and covered all types of units from studios to four-bedrooms.  Record Searchlight

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • California will enforce a full ban on plastic bags in grocery stores starting Jan. 1 — the new rule requires shoppers to use paper bags and allows stores to charge 10 cents per bag.  KRCR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cal Fire in Redding urged residents to follow safe cooking tips during the holidays as fire departments report a sharp rise in home cooking fires on Thanksgiving. The agency advised people to keep children and pets three feet away from stoves, never leave cooking unattended, and call 911 if a fire gets out of control—helping everyone celebrate safely.  KRCR
  • A $3 million water pump station project began on Cypress Avenue in Redding on November 24th to replace an old pump with a new booster pump (using Sacramento River water) and is set to finish by early October (if materials arrive on time).  KRCR

HEALTH NEWS

  • The California Office of Traffic Safety awarded the Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency a $110,000 grant on Monday to support its child safety seat education program aimed at teaching parents proper car seat use—funds will be used for community events, classes, and training sessions.  Action News Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • Mighty Oaks Men's and Women's Rugby clubs will host a free adult rugby clinic on December 13th in Redding for anyone over 18. Participants will learn passing, kicking, and defensive skills before wrapping up with a two-hand touch scrimmage — the clinic offers hands-on training in the sport.  Action News Now
