COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A renovated 1920s house will soon become home to veterans after Nation's Finest spent $200,000 on updates, celebrated with a Waldon Street barbecue. Brian Holland, now caretaker, said he looks forward to the ribbon cutting—planned for next month—when three more veterans will move in.  KRCR
  • On Oct. 12, thousands lined the road in Palo Cedro as flight nurse Suzie Smith’s body was returned after she died four days following a Sacramento helicopter crash. Her son Gabriel Smith urged residents to volunteer and donate to honor her caring legacy—her life will be celebrated on Nov. 14 at Redding Civic Auditorium with doors opening at 5 p.m. and the event starting at 6 p.m.  Action News Now

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • CAL FIRE firefighters contained a residential structure fire in Lake California on Wednesday afternoon after being dispatched at 12:35 p.m. near Blue Mountain Ridge Drive and Tedrock Mountain Pl, quickly knocking down the blaze in 30 minutes with moderate kitchen and smoke damage and no reported injuries—crews then conducted mop-up and overhaul work for two hours while the cause remains under investigation.  Action News Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A Mexican chain restaurant is set to build on an empty lot at Churn Creek Marketplace in Redding—its plans have been in the works for years and construction will begin soon.  Record Searchlight
  • North State Public Radio employees received layoff notices in late September after the station transferred ownership from CapRadio to Chico State, and layoffs will occur at the end of November while current staff are encouraged to reapply—Chico State Enterprises will take over on Dec. 1 to boost funding and ensure uninterrupted service. This change aims to bring new fundraising opportunities and stable management for the station.  ShastaScout

CULTURE NEWS

  • A reporter asked Lou Grush’s family for permission to share the secret Rite Spot salad dressing recipe that made the old restaurant known along Highway 99. He learned that the recipe has changed over time and remains a family secret — a mystery that ties Redding’s past to today.  A News Cafe
  • Civil War reenactors will act out infantry fights, cavalry moves, and battles with musket and cannon fire at Enterprise Park this weekend. A narrator will help visitors understand the events (12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Saturday and 1:00 p.m. on Sunday) and admission is $5 (free for young children).  KQMS

  • Crews are on the Lake Boulevard Improvement Project in Redding this week to install foundations and conduct boring operations that will close the right turn—this temporary closure is set to last through Oct. 27.  Action News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Starting October 23, local groups in Shasta County will host Red Ribbon Week events to combat youth substance abuse. The SCOE event in Redding featuring former DEA agent Rocky Herron will run from 5:30 to 7 — and a drive-thru drug take back event will run next Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 at City Hall.  KRCR

  • Shasta Family YMCA recognized high school athletes Dresden Prader of Foothill and Katelynn Dahlberg of Enterprise as Athletes of the Week for Oct. 6 to 12. Prader rushed for 226 yards with three touchdowns on Oct. 10 against cross-town rivals while Dahlberg dropped her swim times by 29 seconds over six races at the NorCal invitationals + showing leadership on her team.  Record Searchlight
