COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Shasta County Veterans Services Office and United Way — along with about 60 service organizations — will host a one-day Veterans Resource Fair in Anderson on October 16th from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. where veterans can learn about available services.  KQMS
  • The City of Redding is teaming up with Beautify Shasta, Healthy Shasta — and local volunteers to clean Turtle Bay East Open Space on Saturday, October 4 from 8 a.m. to noon. Volunteers should bring closed-toe shoes, long pants, sun protection, and reusable water bottles as tools and gloves will be provided for the Walktober Challenge.  Action News Now
  • The Asphalt Cowboys will hold their first tri-tip sandwich fundraiser for Shasta County Search and Rescue at their clubhouse near the Redding Rodeo Arena on October 10th from 10 to 2—sandwiches, chips and water are offered for a $15 suggested donation with free delivery in Redding for orders of at least 20.  KQMS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Shasta College will host College Quest on October 13 in Redding at its gym from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.—the free event will help students and families explore post-high school education and career paths with representatives from regional and national schools.  Action News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Shasta-Trinity National Forest leaders reported this summer was the busiest for initial fire attacks since 2015 as firefighters fought over 100 lightning fires and more than 150 responses — with the Green Fire burning over 19,000 acres and reaching full containment in August.  KRCR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Four weeks before the Nov. 4 special election, poll workers in Shasta County are waiting to learn when their training will start and where they will work under new election official Clint Curtis—who is new to running elections. Some worry that his unclear plans may cause problems, while others are ready to serve to ensure every vote counts.  ShastaScout
  • Redding councilwoman and community members spoke about Measure A—a citizen-led plan to raise the sales tax from 7.25% to 8.25%—as voters will cast ballots in the November 4 special election.  Action News Now
  • The California Department of Transportation will begin a $151,000 rumble strip project on Highway 299 in Shasta County on October 8 — installing shoulder and centerline strips from 0.2 mile east of Iron Mountain Road to 0.4 mile east of Lower Springs Road with one-way traffic and potential 12-minute delays until 7 a.m. on October 9.  Action News Now
  • Today is the last day for Redding City Manager Barry Tippin as he retires after more than 20 years of service (he began as a civil engineer and took the top role in 2017) while Assistant Steve Bade serves as interim manager until a permanent replacement is selected.  KQMS

HEALTH NEWS

  • Cassidy Jade—a 25-year-old mother from Redding battling a rare form of cancer—has been told by her doctors that she has weeks to live and plans to travel with her young daughters while raising funds for their future.  KRCR
  • Nurses and healthcare workers gathered outside Shasta Regional Medical Center to protest changes they believe hurt patient care, including the closure of the night-shift pharmacy that forced nurses to mix medications. More than 200 staff signed a petition calling for more nurses and a reopened pharmacy—hoping management will adjust operations for safer care.  Action News Now
