COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Healthy Shasta will launch Walktober tomorrow to help people stay active as the weather cools—residents can join individually or in teams with 200 extra spaces available. Teams will have to average 6,000 steps a day to win gift cards—two teams will have the chance to donate $500 to a local charity.  KRCR

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 2025 Stillwater Pow Wow will be held at the Redding Rodeo Grounds from October 3 to October 5 and will feature dance competitions, drum contests, and cultural performances led by host drum Lazy Dog and guest drum Black Lodge — grand entry times are set for each day. An Honored Elders Dinner will take place on October 2 at the Win-River Resort & Casino Event Center to honor local elders with tickets at $15.  Action News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today the U.S. Forest Service announced a schedule for controlled burns in Shasta-Trinity forest for fall, winter, and spring to clear dead wood and lower wildfire risks. The burns—organized by ranger districts as broadcast and pile burns—will begin later this autumn, and residents should check for road closures and updates.  ShastaScout
  • Officials lifted all fire restrictions in the Shasta-Trinity and Six Rivers forests on September 30, allowing visitors to build campfires responsibly and camp in cleared areas after rain and cooler weather lowered fire danger. They urge everyone to be careful & make sure campfires are fully out before leaving.  KRCR

  • Redding City Manager Barry Tippin will retire Friday, October 3 after more than two decades of service, and interim City Manager Steve Bade will take over on October 4 as the city begins a nationwide search for a permanent replacement—ensuring continued government operations.  Action News Now
  • Former Assistant Registrar of Voters Francescut held a campaign kickoff at Lake Redding Park on September 28 as nearly 200 supporters gathered for her 2026 bid, and she said she will restore trust in elections by challenging the changes implemented by Registrar Clint Curtis—who fired her in May.  ShastaScout

HEALTH NEWS

  • Glenn Medical Center closed at 7PM Tuesday night—after losing its Critical Access Hospital designation—that marked its final day of operation.  Action News Now
  • A coalition of local professional, non-profit and government partners led by Arch Collaborative is working to secure state funds for a campus-style behavioral health facility in Redding that Signature Healthcare will run. The project aims to ease pressure on emergency rooms and jails as SB—43 expands who is considered gravely disabled and the final chance for funding approaches.  KQMS
  • Shasta Mosquito — the local mosquito control agency — reported a rise in biting Aedes mosquitoes in Shasta County that breed in small water spots around homes and may carry viruses; the district urged residents to drain water and use repellent to lessen future health risks.  A News Cafe

  • Record Searchlight is hosting a fan vote for high school football’s defensive Player of the Year — a contest featuring standout plays on Friday nights — as league play will begin next Friday, Oct. 10.  Record Searchlight
  • Redding-area high school football games in Week 6 will be played on Friday, Oct. 3—teams will try to secure wins before league play starts next week. The schedule features matchups including Foothill versus Corning at 7:30 p.m., Anderson versus Oroville, Modoc versus Redding Christian, Hayfork versus Burney, Trinity versus Fall River, Los Molinos versus Williams, Weed versus Etna, Las Plumas versus Lassen and Willows versus Gridley.  Record Searchlight
