BUSINESS NEWS

  • Redding public television station KIXE Channel Nine cut its staff by one-third after losing over 40% of its revenue from federal budget cuts. The station operates on reserve funds—needing to raise about $400,000 to keep its three channels running into next spring.  KQMS

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Shasta County's August jobless rate was 5.5% and steady from last August but down half a point from July. The labor force grew by 700 from last year and 1,100 from July—government and leisure jobs fell as education and health services gained.  KQMS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Shasta County Superior Court in Redding will be closed Friday to honor California Native American Day—a state holiday recognized since 1939—and other California courts will also shut while offices like the DMV remain open.  KQMS
  • The Redding Regional Airport runway closes for repairs today and will remain closed until Oct. 20 as part of a two-year project to ensure long-term safety, city officials said. Commercial flights will not operate during the closure while the crosswind runway stays open for general aviation except for six days—when both runways are unavailable.  Record Searchlight
  • Jesse Angelo reported from the Shasta County Elections Office on September 22nd that renovations brought election observers closer to ballot counters — a move that aims to boost election transparency.  Action News Now
  • Athens Avenue in Redding will have sidewalk repairs that require intermittent traffic control at the intersection of Northbound Athens Avenue and eastbound Locust Street as crews work from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Sept. 24 to Oct. 10—motorists are advised to drive carefully or avoid the area.  KRCR
  • The City of Redding said sidewalk repairs on Athens Avenue will begin tomorrow, September 24th, and continue through October 10th as contractors replace two driveway approaches with new sidewalks. The northbound side at the Locust Street intersection will see intermittent traffic control daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.—motorists are advised to drive cautiously.  Action News Now
  • Caltrans announced that the joint seal replacement project for the I-5 ramp at Cottonwood Creek Bridge south of Redding is postponed until spring due to delays in fabrication—motorists will face long-term lane closures on Friday nights through Sunday mornings when construction begins.  Record Searchlight
  • On September 20, 2025, Shasta County’s new Registrar of Voters, Clint Curtis, held an open house to show changes in the elections office, including moving operations downstairs and using volunteers for Election Day work. He said the process will be streamed online and votes will be counted within two hours on November 4—though he will not run tests to verify the system's accuracy, raising concerns among some locals.  A News Cafe
  • Today, the Runway Rehab Project officially begins at Redding Regional Airport as crews have already started work on temporary parking areas — these areas will be used while the main parking area is repaired.  Action News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Redding healthcare, nonprofit and county partners are seeking state funds for a regional mental health campus that will offer rapid triage, crisis stabilization, detox and inpatient psychiatric care—meant to ease pressure on local emergency rooms and jails. The project, led by SHARC and Arch Collaborative, will be proposed under the BHCIP funding rules approved by California voters in 2024.  Action News Now
