COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On August 24, five kittens abandoned near Clear Creek Road at 1300 Hilltop Drive in Redding were rescued by local expert Julie Calkins—who started a GoFundMe to support their care—and are now healthy and active.  KRCR

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Deputies recovered the body of a man who apparently drowned in the Sacramento River in Redding late Monday afternoon near the Sundial Bridge — his body was seen floating shortly after 5 p.m. and retrieved by the sheriff’s boating safety unit.  KQMS

CULTURE NEWS

  • Redding native Bill Seimer's musical 'Scratched Up' debuts this weekend at Trinity Alps Performing Center in Weaverville and will show on Friday, August 29th and Saturday, the 30th—featuring 17 original songs and three acts that tell a story of community among outcasts.  KRCR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A community meeting is held today at 4 p.m. for the Redding Riverfront Specific Plan where residents can share opinions and concerns — the feedback will help shape future plans for the riverfront area.  Action News Now
  • Acting Registrar of Voters Clint Curtiss will ask the Board of Supervisors Tuesday for $125,000 to set up a prototype elections office featuring an observer’s lounge with large TVs for public surveillance—he also plans to spend $13,000 to livestream tallying and warned untested ballots may repeat last November’s overspray ahead of a special election on the One Cent sales tax and redistricting maps.  KQMS
  • On Tuesday, the Shasta County Board of Supervisors considered amendments to strengthen the defensible space ordinance—one change would require clearing hazardous vegetation from unincorporated parcels under 2 acres and set rules for urban parcels under 10 acres while another change would allow enforcement as either an infraction or misdemeanor.  KQMS

SPORTS NEWS

  • Redding-area high school football kicks off today — 16 games feature matchups like Big Valley at Burney at 6:00 p.m. PST and Modoc at Fall River at 7:30 p.m. PST. Other contests, including the local rivalry between West Valley and Red Bluff, will take place on Aug. 29 — setting the stage for a competitive season.  Record Searchlight
