CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Four felony charges were filed Thursday morning against 60 year old Luis Sotero Navarro, a non sworn jail employee accused of having sex with an inmate whose identity remains confidential—detectives obtained evidence last Saturday, an arrest warrant was issued Monday, and he remains in jail on 250,000 dollars bail. - ➤ Tyler Scott McCain pleaded not guilty today to 12 charges including murder with allegations that he killed his wife to stop her from testifying in a domestic violence case, and he remains in jail without bail as his preliminary hearing is set for September 3. ShastaScout
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Amazon broke ground at Stillwater Business Park in Redding on August 22nd—an important step in a long-held plan to attract industrial businesses, while Shasta EDC and the City expect the shovel-ready site to boost jobs and economic growth. Additional investors have also shown interest in the area as development continues to gather momentum. KRCR
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Shasta College will hold a ribbon-cutting for its remodeled Library and Tutoring Center on September 3 at 9 a.m.—with remarks from Dr. Frank Nigro—and will invite community members for open house tours with games and refreshments starting at 9:45 a.m. The renovation is funded by Measure H and Proposition 51 bonds. - ➤ Shasta County invites residents to share their ideas online to improve road safety with a new Highway Safety Plan that aims to reduce traffic injuries and fatalities—feedback is open until Sept. 19. Record Searchlight
- ➤ The Shasta Association of Realtors supports a one-cent sales tax for Redding that will appear on a combined ballot in the November special election as part of an effort endorsed by local police, firefighters, the chamber, Redding Rancheria and Sierra Pacific Industries. The City Council will meet Friday at 3 p.m. to vote on resolutions for the ballot and to set aside $40,000 for legal costs—if passed, the tax is estimated to generate about $30 million annually for roads, public safety, parks, the auditorium, rodeo grounds and the airport with 10% for discretionary spending. - ➤ Shasta Regional Medical Center in Redding completed its 500th TAVR procedure this week. The minimally invasive procedure — which replaces a diseased aortic valve with a catheter-based method and requires only an overnight hospital stay— shows rising local demand with help from specialists including Dr. Jeffrey Southard and Dr. Aazib Khan.
