COMMUNITY NEWS

  • RABA is expanding its services by partnering with local groups to add book exchange baskets on buses, free library rides, and a Little Free Library at the downtown transit station — a move that has already engaged children, families, and seniors in reading during their commutes. The service, started last October, shows that more community members are using the transit system to access books and other resources.  ShastaScout

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A mountain lion fatally attacked a horse at a Redding ranch near Highway 273 — across from Win-River — on August 20th, and owner Chris Zwaga reported the incident to Fish and Game while expressing deep concern for community safety.  KRCR
  • On July 13, a firefighter was struck by a falling tool while fighting the Green Fire on Ripgut Ridge, showing signs of a concussion. Firefighters used special equipment and rope systems to lower her 130 feet and later reviewed safety measures—steps aimed at better securing tools to prevent similar accidents.  KRCR

CRIME NEWS

  • Tyler McCain was arrested Wednesday at his community service job on murder and felony charges linked to the disappearance of his wife Nikki Saelee-McCain—law enforcement also searched his home for evidence.  A News Cafe
  • Tyler McCain was charged with murdering his wife, Nikki Saelee McCain, after her abandoned vehicle was found last May with blood evidence that linked the killing to domestic violence and an effort to silence her testimony (local authorities including the FBI and Department of Homeland Security led the investigation) and he appeared in court in June 2024 while a $30,000 reward remains for tips on her whereabouts.  KRCR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A road project on Hilltop Drive in Redding will cause delays overnight through mid-September — drivers should allow extra travel time during these periods.  Action News Now
  • Nur Pon Open Space in Redding has partly reopened for public use while city crews continue to repair a culvert damaged last fall and keep the full loop closed. Officials advise visitors to avoid the unsafe culvert area + use the alternate entry to access parking, restrooms, and the kayak launch until repairs are complete.  KRCR
  • Caltrans announced repair work on bridges on I-5, Highway 44, and Highway 273 in Shasta and Tehama counties through spring 2026. Motorists in these areas should expect delays and may face lane, shoulder and ramp closures — crews work from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. on weekdays — as repairs continue.  Record Searchlight
