CRIME NEWS

  • Tyler McCain was arrested on August 20 at Shasta County Jail for the alleged murder of his wife Nikki, who disappeared 15 months ago from her Olinda Road home in Anderson—seized evidence from her Chevy Avalanche near the county border supports foul play.  KRCR
  • Roger Neil Schmidt pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and sexual assault in a 1984 case near Burney High School, with DNA evidence linking him to the crimes after he was extradited from Arizona, and he will return to court on August 28.  KQMS

CULTURE NEWS

  • Dancing With the Shasta Stars will return to Redding on Oct. 18 at the Cascade Theatre. Dancers will compete for the Mirror Ball Trophy to benefit One Safe Place Shasta—an event that raises funds for crisis support, emergency shelter, and legal aid.  KRCR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Shasta County board reviewed healthcare and election issues when consultant Chriss Street ended his six-month contract yesterday and urged the county to pursue a Health Professional Shortage Area designation—he noted parts of the county are already marked as medically underserved. Registrar of Voters Clint Curtis requested $125,000 to fund new ballot processing measures, but his budget request was rejected pending a more detailed spending plan.  ShastaScout
  • Advance Redding received the funds requested by City Council to cover maintenance costs for the 50-year-old Civic Auditorium after losing a steady income source from Bethel School of Supernatural Ministries. The city also cancelled rent for the rest of the year as it works on a new lease contract—providing needed support for the public facility.  KQMS
  • On Tuesday, Redding City Council voted to repeal a $489 lift assist fee after residents voiced concerns about high emergency costs, and the fee will no longer be charged while refunds follow legal review—relieving many who were worried about unexpected bills. The fee was first applied in January for non-life-threatening incidents and faced strong public outcry.  ShastaScout
