- ➤ Grange Co-op opens a new 28,000 square foot retail store today at the former Shopko site on 55 Lake Boulevard in North Redding (its 8th location for a chain founded in 1934) and offers a wide selection of farm, ranch, garden, fishing, pet, work and western wear along with a state-of-the-art dog wash. A ribbon cutting is set for 8:30 a.m. today. KQMS
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Fire restrictions have gone into effect on the 3 million acre Shasta-Trinity National Forest, and visitors can only build fires in designated campfire sites—smoking is allowed only in enclosed vehicles, buildings, or developed recreation sites near local lakes. Visitors must drive on designated roads and follow all rules to avoid fines or up to six months in jail. KQMS
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Redding Police are increasing enforcement of school zone rules as children return to school. Officers will monitor drivers for the 25 mph speed limit and require a full stop at flashing red school bus lights (rules applicable to all lanes) to keep students safe. KQMS
- ➤ The Redding Police Department's SWAT team finished a monthly training session on August 14 in an abandoned building in Shasta County to practice entry techniques and boost emergency readiness—Lieutenant Robert Garnero said the team is handpicked after rigorous testing and a two-week training school. KRCR
- ➤ CAL FIRE crews from Happy Valley Fire Center are improving fire safety along Dersch Road today by clearing brush from Millville Plains Road to Bear Creek—the project will later extend from Bear Creek to Highway 44 with one-way traffic control when needed. KQMS
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Shasta County WIC Program has been honored with the Premiere Breastfeeding Award of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Agriculture — one of just 56 programs nationwide to earn the honor. Coordinator Sara Stone said the program increased exclusive breastfeeding rates from 4% to 39% and will celebrate National Breastfeeding Month with local parents' artwork on display at Redding Farmers Market this Saturday outside City Hall.
