COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Redding Police Captain Brian Cole will run a 171-mile race in the Utah desert from September 21st to 27th to raise funds for three local nonprofits — First Five Shasta, Redding Tactical Officer Association and Communities for Police Canines. The funds will support literacy programs, tactical equipment upgrades and improved care for police dogs.  KRCR
  • Shasta County Special Olympics is asking for volunteers to coach and play in flag football and soccer games this fall during practices at Sequoia Middle School and tournaments in San Jose and UC Davis. The season will start on August 16 and end in late October, and interested volunteers should call—530-410-9094 for soccer and 530-941-1052 for football.  KRCR

CRIME NEWS

  • A 39-year-old Redding man, Donald Demercurio, was arrested on May 26 for speeding and drunk driving and, while being handcuffed, shouted racial slurs at an officer — a hate crime that resulted in a 3-year prison sentence with a court-ordered apology.  KQMS

CULTURE NEWS

  • Emmy Award-winner Jane Lynch and Kate Flannery will perform at the Cascade Theatre in Redding at 7:30 p.m. on September 5—delivering a cabaret show called 'The Trouble with Angels' that features comedy, music, and mischief; tickets are on sale at the theatre box office.  Action News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fire crews said the Big Cliff Fire southwest of Etna is 26% contained after burning 952 acres with flare-ups near Creole Belle Gulch and Blake’s Fork kept in check — a timber fire north of Little Valley burned 51 acres and is 10% contained while the Green Fire near Lake Shasta and Butler Fire near Forks of Salmon are 99% and 96% contained respectively.  KQMS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On August 11, 2025, a Chico Fire Department engine and team assisted CAL FIRE in battling the ongoing Gifford Fire while crews from Weaverville, Redding, Lake Shastina, and the Sacramento River Fire District joined the response.  Action News Now
  • The City of Redding said that maintenance work on a utility manhole caused traffic control operations on southbound Churn Creek Road from Harpole Road to Camino Court on Monday—continues today from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.—and will resume on Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Action News Now
  • Shasta County Registrar of Voters Clint Curtiss will ask the Board of Supervisors at today's meeting for nearly $2.6 million to lease and retrofit the old Joann Fabrics building on Dana Drive for the Elections Department — $1.2 million will fund the upgrades needed for equipment and modifications so every citizen can count ballots. Former Assistant Clerk Joanna Francescut, who was fired by Curtiss, will run against him next year.  KQMS
  • City officials in Redding announced that street work will occur Monday, August 11 through August 20 at the intersection of Placer and Chestnut Street as crews remove and replace a failing storm drain system from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays—drivers are advised to use caution and choose alternate routes.  Action News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Hospitals across California, including those in Shasta, are bracing for impacts from Medicaid cuts in the One Big Beautiful Bill. Health officials say lower payments may force some hospitals to reduce services—resulting in longer emergency room waits and longer trips for care.  ShastaScout
