CRIME NEWS

  • A driver was arrested for DUI after a deadly crash on Highway 273 killed a pedestrian in Redding on August 8th.  Action News Now
  • Michael Dean Flores, 36, of Gerber was sentenced to nearly 5 years in state prison for domestic violence and fraud—he blocked his dating partner from leaving his home, struck and bit her during the attack, then tried to use a fake check to buy a truck.  KQMS
  • A 21-year-old man—Raul Mendoza-Rabago—attacked a victim in the bathroom at the Red Bluff PATH Shelter in December and was sentenced to three years in state prison after violating probation.  KQMS
  • Donald Demercurio, who shouted violent threats and racial slurs at a Redding police officer during a May 26 DUI stop, will be sentenced to three years in prison on August 12th—he must also apologize on the record in court.  Record Searchlight
  • Redding man Steven King, 57, pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted murder, mayhem, assault with a firearm, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence for a shooting at an RV park in April — his case is still active.  Action News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Crews are battling the 902-acre Big Cliff Fire southwest of Etna—currently 19% contained—by using helicopters and tactical firing on steep terrain while structure protection continues near Rainbow Mine and a 20-mile section of the Pacific Crest Trail stays closed as temperatures rise. Crews are also working on the 21,058-acre Butler Fire at 94% containment and the 19,022-acre Green Fire at 99% containment.  KQMS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Redding Planning Commission will update on the Riverfront Specific Plan Tuesday at 4 o’clock in the City Council Chambers — the public is invited to attend and give feedback on proposals for land use, transportation, and development along the Sacramento River edge.  KQMS

  • Brett Abrams is the new high school sports reporter for the Record Searchlight—he studied journalism at BU and worked on local sports coverage before returning to Redding. He looks forward to sharing local game stories and connecting with fans in our community.  Record Searchlight
