COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Arch Collaborative is offering safe shelter for victims of violent hate crimes—its emergency housing services are available on a same-day basis to help those affected by recent incidents, while the organization works with first responders to connect victims with medical care and legal support. Local law enforcement has already been alerted to direct citizens in need to the hotline during or after a violent crime.  ShastaScout

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hambro Recycling said the Jolly Giant Flea Market will close when the new year starts after a 45-year run—new owners plan to turn the building into a drive-thru recycling center.  Action News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A report found that 53 schools in Shasta County are in high fire danger zones and affect 13,548 students this school year. Experts say schools must plan and upgrade their buildings—using safer methods—to help protect students from wildfires.  ShastaScout

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • This fall, thousands of tarantulas will emerge in California as males search for mates while females stay near their burrows—experts say these spiders play a key role in nature. In Redding, visitors can view captive tarantulas at Turtle Bay Exploration Park and are urged not to handle wild specimens.  Record Searchlight

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Redding City Council voted to hold a special election in November to ask voters about a one-cent sales tax estimated to raise $30 million annually. The tax will fund roads, police, fire services, parks, the airport, and other projects—an initiative backed by local public safety unions and community groups.  KQMS
  • Judge Stephen Baker ruled that the 30-year intergovernmental agreement between the Board of Supervisors and Redding Rancheria (meant to provide law enforcement, fire and emergency services for a planned casino along I-5) is illegal because key county departments were not involved in negotiations. A status conference is scheduled for Friday, August 8 to decide the case's final disposition.  KRCR

  • Travelers are warned about chikungunya, a virus spread by mosquitoes from an outbreak in Guangdong Province, China; California noted two travel-related cases as of July 1.
