COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The famous Asphalt Cowboys will host a Community Barbeque fundraiser on Sunday, September 7 at Lake Redding Park near Benton Drive from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. — food options include 5500 pounds of tri‑tip, 2500 pounds of chicken, 500 gallons of Cowboy Beans, 450 pounds of coleslaw and 1000 loaves of garlic bread. The event will feature a live auction from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. with tickets available for $13 in advance or $15 at the park.  KRCR

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A motorcycle crash on Interstate 5 near Cypress Avenue in Redding reduced the southbound lanes to two—motorists are advised to expect delays—according to the California Department of Transportation.  KRCR

BUSINESS NEWS

  • After 45 years, the Jolly Giant flea market off Highway 273 between Redding and Anderson will close at the end of the year after being purchased by Hambro Recycling—who plans to convert the location into a processing facility with a drive through CRV buyback center.  KQMS

CRIME NEWS

  • Two men accused of last October's double murder in South Redding will appear in court this week—suspect Andrew Greer-Herrera was arrested in Lookout while alleged accomplice Trevon Gage Evanoff was taken in Sparks.  KQMS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Managers on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest used careful planning to limit damage from more than 5,000 lightning strikes that sparked 57 wildfires between June 30 and August 2; 54 fires stayed under 2 acres while the Green, Horse and Helena Fires grew larger—Green Fire spread to 19,022 acres and is 97% contained.  KQMS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On July 31, the Redding Fire Department gave a behind-the-scenes look at its daily engine checks at Station 8 led by Fire Engineer Chase Rulofson. The checks include a full D.O.T. review and routine repairs by a fire mechanic team – efforts that keep the engines safe and ready for emergencies.  KRCR
  • The Redding Fire Department now charges residents $489 for lift assists that pull fire engines away from major emergencies & strain response times, with fees applied to calls from January 2025. Residents may request a waiver by sending a written explanation to the fire chief.  ShastaScout

HEALTH NEWS

  • Redding Rancheria invites community members to its annual Discover Health Fair today at the Win River Event Center and the adjoining Community Center — health professionals and vendors will offer free screenings like blood pressure, body fat, and body mass index tests from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.  KQMS
