ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Boat crews have used boats — which is a unique way to get to hard-to-reach areas — to transport firefighters and equipment across Shasta Lake to fight the nearly contained Green Fire that started on July 1. These crews work around the clock facing night navigation challenges as officials plan for ongoing cleanup and repair in the remote fire zone. ShastaScout
- ➤ Firefighters are working near Lake Shasta to contain the Green Fire, which burns 19,022 acres and is now 82% contained. Crews repaired 19 miles of the 51 miles of cut dozer line — 19 miles still need repair — as equipment is being redeployed and conditions grow warmer and drier this week. KQMS
- ➤ Crews battled several lightning fires across northern California's mountains as thunderstorms continue in the forecast this week. The Berry Fire burned 11 acres near Highway 36, a fire near Post Mountain was contained at 3 acres, the Medicine Fire burned 260 acres with 45% containment, plus small fires remain near Burney, Mt, Shasta, Weed and in the Klamath National Forest. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Redding Regional Airport will suspend flights from September 23 to October 20 to resurface its runway and improve lighting. Cal Fire’s airtankers will face a six-day delay and may be moved to Chico—causing a 10-minute extra flight time when fighting fires. KRCR
- ➤ California Governor Gavin Newsom issued two emergency proclamations on July 29 for seven Northern California counties — including Shasta, Trinity, and Modoc—to allow CAL OES to help recover from widespread damage caused by flooding and landslides. Action News Now
- ➤ Shasta County Supervisors met on July 29th, 2025 to discuss wildfires, livestock risks from gray wolves, and homelessness. They approved nearly $16 million in a state grant for a 45 unit affordable housing project for low-income seniors and homeless veterans + are negotiating land in South Redding for an alternative custody program. - ➤ Former Shasta County District Two Supervisor Tim Garman is running against incumbent Chris Kelstrom for the District 5 seat next year after redistricting moved his Happy Valley home into the district. Garman said he wants roads fixed, neighborhoods safe, and government that works for the people—he aims to end division with a fresh set of priorities. KQMS
- ➤ Tehama County Board of Supervisors met Tuesday (9 a.m.) to consider sending a letter to the Attorney General so the Department of Justice could take over an investigation into supervisor Pati Nolen, who was alleged to have drunk on the job, and to address conflicts involving Sheriff Kain. The board explained that personal involvement and bias among local officials made it hard for them to manage budgetary and oversight duties. Action News Now
