Good morning, Redding. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 26th of July.

CRIME NEWS

  • Michael Hale testified in court about being shot at a north Redding trailer on April 6 when he approached 57-year-old Steven King over alleged online harassment, and the judge found enough evidence to move forward with felony charges (attempted murder and assault with a firearm) with King's arraignment set for August 7.  A News Cafe
  • 35-year-old Robert Parker Milton (accused of killing his 71-year-old neighbor William Alan Dressler on Brent Road in East Redding last August using a cinder block and a gun) pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity and remains in custody as his trial is set for August 27th.  KQMS
  • Roger Neil Schmidt, a suspect in a 1984 cold case involving the murder of 18-year-old Terry Arndt and the sexual assault of an 18-year-old, waived his right to an extradition hearing in Pima County on July 25 and will be extradited to face charges in Shasta County — a DNA match linked him to the evidence.  KRCR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Seven years after the Carr Fire, Whiskeytown Environmental School began demolishing its old student housing and checking plumbing and electrical systems as part of its rebuild effort—funds from the Grow Back Stronger campaign have exceeded $5.7 million. The school has restarted field trips and day camps, although full operations will not resume for a few years.  KRCR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Firefighters are battling the Green Fire and Butler Fire in nearby forests as they brace for thunderstorms with winds — up to 50 mph — and lightning today. Crews improved containment on the Green Fire with cool, wet weather and will continue monitoring the fires for new blazes while evacuation warnings stay in effect.  Record Searchlight

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Redding police today remind drivers to remove distractions while driving, warning that cell phone use can lead to fines ($150 to $200) and extra points on driver licenses if cited a second time.
