COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Seven years ago, the Carr Fire ignited near Whiskeytown Lake—claiming eight lives and destroying over 1,600 homes. Today, local residents remember the lives lost and honor the heroes—showing strength as the community continues to rebuild.  KRCR

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighter Renzo Reginato of the Southern California El Cariso Hotshots was injured when a falling tree struck him while battling the Orleans Complex Fire near Orleans on July 18 at about 2 p.m.—he was airlifted to Mercy Medical Center in Redding for emergency surgeries and is planned to be transferred to Craig Hospital for rehab as his sister-in-law starts a fundraiser to help his family cover recovery expenses.  KRCR

CRIME NEWS

  • On Tuesday afternoon, West Redding police arrested a Toyota Tundra driver after he was reported drunk from a Carl’s Jr parking lot on Eureka Way and, when pulled over, he fled on Highway 299 at speeds up to 110 mph — he struck several vehicles and nearly ran over an officer before being taken into custody near Old Shasta.  KQMS
  • Roger Neal Schmidt Sr., 64, was arrested Saturday in Tucson and is now a suspect in the unsolved 1984 case in which 18-year-old Terry Arndt was fatally shot and his teenage companion was raped—DNA evidence linked Schmidt to the crime scene and officials expect to extradite him to Shasta County soon.  Record Searchlight
  • On July 23, Redding police stopped Augustine Witcraft—a known felon with active warrants—in his car on Interstate 5 after officers found a loaded handgun under the driver's seat and more than five pounds of meth packaged in six bags.  KRCR
  • The Redding Police Department increased its efforts to stop youth from buying tobacco and vape products by inspecting Cloud 9 Smoke Shop on July 1 and seizing over 600 illegal flavored items while citing an employee on July 16—further, a July 18 operation targeting adults buying for minors led to five more citations and a duffle bag of over 300 flavored vape products seized—actions taken as part of a state-funded strategy to enforce the law.  KRCR
