COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of Northern California's Building Bridges initiative has received over $650,000 from local and state funders—such as the California Endowment, Ford Family Foundation, The McConnell Foundation, and Redding Rancheria—to support its goal of raising $1.1 million over two years for fostering respectful civic dialogue in Shasta County and surrounding communities. The organization is hosting Listening Sessions and partnering with the Harwood Institute for Public Innovation to build trust in divided communities.  Action News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Roger Schmidt of Tucson was arrested on July 22 for a 1984 murder in Burney — Shasta County officials say evidence now links him to the cold case.  Action News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, firefighters reinforced containment lines near Ripgut Ridge drainage in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest as windy conditions and dry weather slowed the spread of the Green Fire, which remained at 19,022 acres with containment rising to 60%. An evacuation order remains for Zone LKH-1448-A and warnings continue for nearby areas—officials are using air and ground crews to patrol for flareups.  Record Searchlight

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers in Redding must expect ramp closures at Sundial Bridge Drive, Park Marina Drive, and the Interstate 5 connectors as overnight roadwork begins tonight at 7 p.m. and runs until 7 a.m.—Sunday evenings through Friday mornings.  Action News Now
  • Shasta County’s new Registrar of Voters, Clint Curtis, will hire temporary employees and seek volunteers to make the election process less dependent on technology — he plans to switch to paper poll books, cut poll pads, and use cameras, video and live streaming so citizens can verify the vote. Most roles in the Elections Office will no longer require computer skills.  KQMS
  • Redding Public Works will spend $10.4M to improve safety and accessibility on Victor and Cypress avenues by adding a new single-lane roundabout and a walking trail linking Alfreda Way to Mistletoe Elementary School — the project area will also see repaved roads, new lighting, and updated signage. Preliminary utility work will start in 2026, with main construction planned for early 2027 and completion later that year.  Record Searchlight
  • Redding officials have nearly reached the required signatures—6,120 verified out of the needed 5,816, with about 600 more to count—for a petition to raise the local sales tax from 7.25% to 8.25% if it appears on the November ballot. The city council will meet on Aug. 5 to discuss calling a Special Election—if approved, the increase will bring an extra $30 million annually for public services.  Record Searchlight
  • Travelers on I-5 near the Cottonwood Creek Bridge 15 miles south of Redding should expect major delays starting as early as September 5 through September 7 due to planned bridge joint replacement work by Caltrans. Officials warn that lane closures from Friday nights to Sunday mornings will cause long backups on some Saturdays with no alternate routes available.  KRCR
  • The Redding Public Library will close from Friday, August 1 until Monday, August 4 for carpet replacement, with the Community Room reopening on Tuesday, August 5 and limited services available until the work ends at the end of October or early November—city staff say the $798,000 project is funded by a grant and was scheduled to avoid disruption to summer reading programs.  KRCR
