ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Fire managers said the 11,766-acre Green Fire is following its predicted course near key containment lines—moving north into the Smith Creek Drainage, west near Brock Mountain Road, east along a ridge by Rip Gut Creek, and south where four firefighting boats protect the Pit River. More than 1,400 firefighters are containing the blaze, and they said temperatures will moderate Monday though winds will pick up to 20 mph later this week—using the Hirz Campgrounds and boat ramp as a base camp. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Residents in Anderson face a 169% increase in sewer bills over the next five years, beginning with a 65% rise on August 1 to fund necessary wastewater system upgrades and meet rising operating costs+City Manager Joey Forseth-Deshais noted that the rate changes follow repeated draws on reserves since 2018 and a public meeting is scheduled today at 5:30 p.m. at the Anderson Council Chambers. - ➤ Redding Police Community Work Program Officers and Shasta County Alternative Custody Program workers cleared 25,000 pounds of material from illegal homeless camps at locations including Rhyolite Drive, Shamrock Street, the east end of Cypress Avenue, Lost Lane, Parkview Park and Clear Creek Market—1,500 pounds were removed from under the Oregon Gulch Bridge on Westside Road. They have cleared 336,360 pounds of trash this year. KQMS
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Shasta Mosquito and Vector Control District found the season’s first mosquito carrying West Nile Virus in a sample from Northeast Redding. The virus is spread when mosquitoes bite infected birds—symptoms include high fever, severe headache, confusion and stiff neck. KQMS
