EDUCATION NEWS

  • Shasta College has received a $1,742,570 federal grant over five years — to fund its TRIO Student Support Services program — that will help low-income, first-generation, and disabled students boost retention and graduation rates. The program currently supports 180 students by providing tutoring, financial aid guidance, and mentoring.  Action News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Green Fire near Lake Shasta grew to 8,087 acres by Friday night and forced evacuations for residents in parts of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The fire remains at 0% containment and heavy smoke has led to a health advisory through Sunday—residents should follow evacuation orders and stay safe.  Record Searchlight

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sheriff Michael Johnson said the county’s Coroner’s Office will expand behind the current building on Breslauer Way—despite potential staffing challenges.  Action News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mosquitoes infected with West Nile virus were found in northeastern Redding on July 10 — the first detection in Shasta County this year. County officials sprayed an ultra-low volume mist on Friday to reduce the risk of disease from mosquito bites.  Record Searchlight
