ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A 12-year-old boy was rescued from drowning in the Anderson Cottonwood Canal near Diamond Street on Monday evening when local resident CJ McLaughlin used his CPR skills—emergency services later transported the boy to a nearby hospital where he is recovering. KRCR
- ➤ Search teams including CHP Air Operations are still looking for 21-year-old Lesner Velasquez in Avalanche Gulch after he disappeared following a rollover accident on Oak Run Road on May 29 + the taxi dropped him off at a trailhead where he planned to beat a friend’s hiking time. KQMS

- ➤ The Shasta County Arson Task Force arrested 34-year-old Charles Joseph Eshom on Monday for an outstanding warrant during a sweep that issued citations to two Burney men—Clifford George Bednar and James Scott Harper. KQMS
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ CAL FIRE and Forest Service crews are battling several lightning-sparked fires in Northern California this week — including a 20-acre Miller Fire in Trinity County and a 47-acre Reading Fire near Douglas City that is 80% contained. In Siskiyou County, the Table Rock Fire has burned 99 acres at 5% containment while the Shasta Fire covers more than 5 acres and the Slough Fire about 1.5 acres. KQMS
- ➤ Ranchers in Shasta County are growing concerned as rising gray wolf numbers are causing cattle deaths and stressing livestock—resulting in lower calf weights and conception rates and costing an estimated $69,000–$162,000 per wolf. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife confirmed 10 wolf packs statewide and has launched a team to address such livestock losses in neighboring areas, though no specific measures have been announced for Shasta County. - ➤ A report by Shasta Scout said Shasta County’s new Registrar of Voters, Clint Curtis, violated California campaign finance rules by soliciting contributions at a private event at the Redding Library on May 24th (he filed his campaign documents only on June 2nd). He fired Assistant Registrar Joanna Francescut on May 27th after she announced her candidacy on May 13th, a move that raised questions about his oversight of election rules. KQMS
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Shasta County Health Officer Dr. James C. Mu declared a public health crisis as the shortage of physicians has led to longer wait times and increased pressure on emergency departments in rural and underserved areas. The county will focus on recruiting new doctors and securing state and federal funding to improve healthcare services. Action News Now

- ➤ The Record Searchlight named Manny Sleezer from West Valley and Anna Pena from Shasta high school as the Shasta Family YMCA Athletes of the Week—Sleezer ended his baseball season with 28 RBIs, 11 doubles and one home run as his team fell short of a regional title, while Pena scored 38 runs, hit five home runs and made key plays during recent softball contests.
