- ➤ Local artist Dustin Gall—after more than a year of work—completed a wall-sized mural at Grant Elementary School that honors teachings from '7 Habits of Highly Effective People.' He celebrated the mural's unveiling on the last day of school and noted that students and parents are already discussing its impact. KRCR
- ➤ Northstate community members are rallying around the family of fire officer Mike Klimek — a dedicated firefighter — who died suddenly on May 27. His brother-in-law started a GoFundMe to help his wife Camille and sons Grady and Lucas with funeral and transitional expenses, and the fund has exceeded its $15,000 goal as of June 5. KRCR
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Redding Police say 21-year-old Lesner Velasquez has been missing since May 29 after his rollover accident on Oak Run Road and was last seen taking a taxi near Wells Fargo—he was dropped off at Avalanche Gulch Trailhead and is believed to be in the Mount Shasta area—anyone with tips should call 530-225-4200. - ➤ At 6:33 a.m. Thursday morning, firefighters responded to a travel trailer fire in the 23000 block of Elk Trail in Jones Valley northeast of Redding and stopped the fire's forward progress after flames spread to a quarter acre of vegetation. Action News Now
- ➤ An early morning crash on Wednesday just after 5:15 a.m. sent a car into Whiskeytown Lake near Kennedy Memorial Drive where CHP and CAL FIRE confirmed the driver aged 19, the passenger aged 18 and their dog escaped with only minor injuries and were taken to Mercy Medical Center in Redding. KQMS
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Shasta County Office of Education will launch its free summer meals program on June 9 at over two dozen sites to offer breakfast and lunch for children 18 and under. Families may choose any location—meals must be eaten on-site and dietary restrictions should be checked in advance. KRCR
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Boaters must clean, drain, and dry their boats before launching at Whiskeytown, Shasta, Trinity and Lewiston Lakes—federal and state law forbids spreading invasive golden mussels between water bodies. Action News Now
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ At Tuesday night's meeting, the Redding City Council considered a plan for a downtown entertainment zone that would allow adults 21 and over to carry and drink alcohol from licensed businesses on public streets. City staff will work with law enforcement, local business owners, and event organizers to set the zone’s boundaries and a year-round operating schedule of 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.—pending further public input and review.
