Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 30th of May.
Good morning, Redding.
On Tuesday night, officers chased Joshua Powell, a 32-year-old probationer, in a stolen pickup truck after he sped from an attempted stop on Shasta View Drive and abandoned the vehicle on Rose Avenue — he later surrendered at an apartment where he faces three felony warrants.
Redding police arrested Haley Johnson, a 33-year-old woman, on May 29 for fentanyl trafficking after officers stopped her on Interstate 5 in a rental vehicle and found 5.2 ounces of suspected fentanyl that could cause over 73,000 overdoses.
On March 26, a Redding police officer shot David Schaeffer as he sped away from an attempted arrest in a Safeway parking lot in East Cypress—extra body camera footage obtained by Shasta Scout shows officers only started recording after the shooting and the department has not named the shooter or explained the delay in camera activation.
Local Fire Chief Dan Stenger urged Redding residents to clear overgrown lawns, debris and flammable materials from near their homes as fire season begins, advising that firewood be kept at least 20 feet away and hazardous brush reported to fire authorities—city or county as appropriate. The Mountain Gate Volunteer Fire Department said its firefighters have completed new training to prepare for potentially worsening conditions.
After flooding forced a six-day shutdown, most court cases at the Shasta County Courthouse have been rescheduled over the next four to six weeks and arraignment deadlines were extended using emergency relief—some sessions were held via Webex while others took place in person.
The courthouse still has its second floor closed as staff work to redirect case locations.
West Valley beat Lassen 10-0 on Saturday at Tiger Field in Redding to win the CIF Northern Section Division III title — its first since 1992 under first-year coach Willie Church — after a season marked by a 17-game win streak.
