COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the South Market Microshelter Community in Redding marked two years on Mark Street by hosting tours of its eight-unit facility that offers housing, case management, and support services to help residents move into permanent homes. United Way President Kalie Brisbon said the program has achieved an 85% success rate in helping residents transition successfully—underscoring its role in the fight against homelessness.  KRCR

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Redding firefighters contained a structure fire on the 19000 block of Union School Road near Moonlite Lane after it spread to nearby vegetation—crews remain on site for mop-up operations while traffic control measures keep drivers away and no injuries were reported.  Action News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities reported that the remains of 84-year-old Dolores Sakamoto and her 64-year-old daughter Vivian Luna, who were last seen in Chico on July 20 and whose cell phones pinged near Mount Shasta Ski Park on July 23, were found in a black 1996 Lexus ES300 near Interstate 5 in a remote part of Shasta County—officials are working to confirm their identities.  KQMS
  • 40-year-old Simon Abraham Tikue was sentenced on Tuesday to 107 years-to-life in prison plus 18 years with no chance of parole for murdering two people in Oak Run in November 2021; DNA from a glove and zip ties linked him to the killings and an earlier robbery in Redding.  KQMS
  • Redding Police arrested 32-year-old Joshua Powell after he led officers on a high-speed chase Tuesday — his vehicle slowed from mechanical issues then crashed into parked cars, and he later surrendered at an apartment on Rose Avenue while facing charges including reckless evading, possession of a stolen vehicle, probation violation and controlled substance influence.  Action News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Gina Langford from Cottonwood Veterinary Clinic said rising Northstate heat can cause pets and livestock to suffer from heatstroke when animals spend too long outdoors or are left in hot cars — she urges pet owners to keep animals indoors or in the shade with water and to watch for signs like heavy panting or collapse. She also mentioned that pavement burns can be prevented by using booties or keeping pets off the hot ground.  KRCR

SPORTS NEWS

  • Shasta Family YMCA honored two high school athletes this week from West Valley and U-Prep for standout performances during recent NSCIF games. Jayden Knight led West Valley with nine wins and 75 strikeouts while Leigha Wood drove 10 home runs, 38 hits and 34 RBIs during the May 24 contest — recognitions that spotlight their strong plays.  Record Searchlight
  • The Redding Fighting Game Club will host NorCal Knockout this Saturday at Win River Casino—Eagle Room with over 70 participants and a prize pool exceeding $2,400. Organizers hope the tournament will help root Redding as a new hub for video game competitions.  KRCR
