- ➤ Shasta County unemployment rate dropped to 5% in April — a decline of half a percentage point from March and 0.3 points lower than last April. Gains were seen in wholesale trade, business services, private education, and health while losses occurred in government and service jobs. KQMS

- ➤ Today, the National Park Service approved the environmental study that clears the way for rebuilding Whiskeytown Environmental School (damaged by the Carr Fire) in Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. - ➤ Highway 89 through Lassen Volcanic National Park has opened for the season today after mild snowfall, though higher trails like Bumpass Hell remain closed + plow crews began in early April and record efforts date back to 1931. KQMS

- ➤ Defensible space inspectors from Shasta County Fire+CAL FIRE will visit Old Shasta neighborhoods soon to help property owners meet new wildfire prevention rules. The guidelines require a 30- to 100-foot buffer, with grass cut to 4 inches and stumps trimmed to 8 inches. Action News Now
- ➤ Caltrans engineers began repairs on Highway 299 east of Buckhorn Summit Wednesday after discovering an unstable slope that damaged a pullout and the eastbound shoulder.
