- ➤ The Law Enforcement Torch Run supports Special Olympics athletes across Northern California. Redding's CHP ran yesterday at 9 a.m. from Best Buy parking lot to Ross parking lot—while Humboldt County will run today at 10 a.m. from Arcata Marsh along Eureka waterfront trail. KRCR
- ➤ United Way of Northern California is hosting a fundraiser at Chipotle (4000 S. Bonnyview Road) on Saturday, June 6 from 4 a.m. to 8 p.m., where 25% of sales will support local disaster relief and community programs. KRCR

- ➤ Shasta County unemployment rate dropped to 5% in April — a decline of half a percentage point from March and 0.3 points lower than last April. Gains were seen in wholesale trade, business services, private education, and health while losses occurred in government and service jobs. KQMS

- ➤ Two classified school employees from Shasta County (Millville Elementary custodian Albert Macias and Foothill High School clerk Vanessa Bennett) were honored by State Department of Education Superintendent Tony Thurmond during a ceremony in Sacramento last week, after 141 statewide nominations. - ➤ Today, the National Park Service approved the environmental study that clears the way for rebuilding Whiskeytown Environmental School (damaged by the Carr Fire) in Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. - ➤ County agricultural commissioner John Ingram warned Redding Costco shoppers who bought grapevines or citrus plants since April 21 to check for glassy-winged sharpshooters that could spread Pierce’s disease and harm vineyards (the store has stopped selling the affected plants). - ➤ Highway 89 through Lassen Volcanic National Park has opened for the season today after mild snowfall, though higher trails like Bumpass Hell remain closed + plow crews began in early April and record efforts date back to 1931. KQMS

- ➤ Defensible space inspectors from Shasta County Fire+CAL FIRE will visit Old Shasta neighborhoods soon to help property owners meet new wildfire prevention rules. The guidelines require a 30- to 100-foot buffer, with grass cut to 4 inches and stumps trimmed to 8 inches. Action News Now
- ➤ Caltrans engineers began repairs on Highway 299 east of Buckhorn Summit Wednesday after discovering an unstable slope that damaged a pullout and the eastbound shoulder. The repairs — which include layered materials for stability — will close the eastbound lane for about 3 weeks, causing roughly 15-minute delays. KQMS
