COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Eighteen bike racks were installed in front of downtown businesses on May 21 to hold two bikes each during errands; the project was a collaborative effort by Healthy Shasta, Shasta College Welding Club, Sierra Pacific Windows, and the Public Works crew.  Action News Now
  • Preston Sharp of Redding, founder of Veterans Flags and Flowers, won a citizenship award and is preparing for Memorial Day by placing flags and flowers on veterans' graves at local cemeteries. He and volunteers honored veterans last week at Redding Memorial Park — Igo Veterans Cemetery.  Action News Now
  • Starting today, RABA launches its Beach Bus to Whiskeytown National Recreation Area for $2, offering rides on Thursdays through Saturdays to Brandy Creek and Oak Bottom until Sept. 7. Riders may bring bike + kayak along.  Action News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two Shasta County school employees received statewide recognition when State Superintendent Tony Thurmond announced Employee of the Year Awards for classified staff; Albert Macias of Millville Elementary (5 years) and Vanessa Bennett of Foothill High in Palo Cedro (17 years) were honored.  Action News Now
  • The Redding Aquatic Center was chosen as one of just over 100 facilities nationwide by the Red Cross for swim lessons and lifeguard training, and it will host Waterama tomorrow (5 to 7 p.m.) with free swim evaluations, water safety resources, and life jacket fittings.  Action News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Visitors planning a Memorial Day trip to Modoc National Forest can use campgrounds in the Warner Mountains, Devils Garden and Big Valley districts with boil-water rules and fee requirements; however, offices are closed May 25 and Medicine Lake, Upper Rush Creek and Obsidian mines remain off limits.  Record Searchlight

FINANCE NEWS

  • On May 21, financial experts updated Bill Bengen's retirement guideline (the 4% rule now becomes 4.7%), meaning Redding residents may need to boost their monthly budgets to ensure their savings last through retirement.  Record Searchlight

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Assemblywoman Hadwick recognized Ducks Unlimited as the District One nonprofit of the year for its work with farmers & conservation groups to restore wetlands and support youth hunting traditions. The award highlights its role in improving habitat and ecosystem health across the region.  KQMS
  • On June 1, RABA will end free ride cards for seniors due to expired grant funds and will streamline routes by replacing some fixed services with RABA Runabout plus a new digital discount program via Tap-2-Ride. These changes will optimize transit service for the community.  KRCR

HEALTH NEWS

  • Shasta County contained a measles outbreak from late January by contacting over 600 people and working with teachers + church leaders and health staff to advise on isolation and vaccination. The county declared the outbreak over two and a half months later and its approach may guide other communities.  Record Searchlight
