Good morning, Redding.
Jason Allen Pope, 38, was sentenced to 8 months in prison for identity theft in Tehama County—where he stole about $3,000 from a victim’s account—and his term will be added to a 4-year sentence from Butte County, with a case still pending in Shasta County after he led Redding police on a high-speed chase two months after his fraud arrest.
On Monday night, May 19, a wildfire near Mount Shasta burned 12 acres—triggering evacuation warnings—and by Tuesday, local crews had reached 50% containment and lifted all warnings while investigators continued probing its cause.
Shasta County Fire Safe Council has urged residents to get ready for peak fire season by clearing the first five feet around their homes and spacing brush and trees—steps that reduce fire risks from flying embers.
Cal Fire also advised removing burnable items within 30 feet and planning an evacuation route in case of a wildfire.
Redding City Council and community members discussed the Riverfront Specific Plan on Tuesday night—using nearly 18 months of public input to shape a planning framework for developing 380 acres of riverfront land.
The council approved the presentation and city staff will now prepare a draft plan and environmental impact review while scheduling more public meetings.
Two high school athletes have been recognized by the Shasta Family YMCA this week for their outstanding achievements; JJ Johnson (Enterprise) helped his team win the 4x100 relay on May 16, and Elisea Wiegand (Foothill) pitched a shutout with 15 strikeouts in a 7-0 softball game.
