BUSINESS NEWS

  • City officials and United Airlines announced that daily nonstop flights from Redding Regional Airport to Denver International Airport will begin on May 22—there is a celebratory event at noon before the inaugural departure at 12:50 p.m. with return flights later from Denver.  Action News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • A vigil was held on May 17 for missing Redding woman Nikki Cheng-Saelee McCain, who was last heard from on May 18 after leaving a painful marriage—her family now works with the Shasta County Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit as the search continues for clues to her disappearance.  KRCR
  • A 43-year-old Redding man, identified as Braden Thorpe, was arrested on Saturday, May 18 for allegedly causing multiple hit-and-run collisions while driving under the influence—police said his silver Nissan Pathfinder hit three vehicles and several city light poles as he tried to flee.  KRCR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Caltrans District 2 Director Dave Moore and City of Redding Public Works Director Michael Webb will host a community bike ride on May 22 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.—participants will cycle through Downtown and stop at key sites such as Diestelhorst Bridge, Benton Drive/Riverside Drive, Center Street/Trinity Street, Yuba Street/Market Street, and Continental Street to learn about upcoming transportation projects.  Action News Now
  • Shasta County declared a local emergency on May 13 due to increasing gray wolf attacks on livestock and rural property. The Board of Supervisors requested urgent help from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife — they may relocate or euthanize wolves that show an imminent danger.  KRCR
  • The Shasta County Grand Jury issued a report on Shasta County Jail after 5 in-custody deaths occurred in 13 months—comparing 22 deaths in Shasta to 1 each in Madera and Imperial and 5 in Butte—and blamed drug-related factors while noting a staffing crisis with over 30,000 overtime hours and recommending body cameras, extra security cameras, alternative custody, and grant money.  KQMS

SPORTS NEWS

  • Two Redding-area baseball teams are on the brink of elimination after Friday losses while two others are one step closer to a section championship. Foothill lost 2 to 0 to Red Bluff and will play Pleasant Valley at 10 a.m. Tuesday, and Redding Christian won 10 to 2 over Plumas Charter and is set to face top-seeded Los Molinos at 4 p.m. Tuesday — the matchups mark high-stakes moments in the CIF Northern Section playoffs.  Record Searchlight
