COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Monday, May 18 the Stuff the Bus food drive gathered nearly 12,000 pounds of food in Redding and Chico. The Salvation Army reported 10,977 pounds in Redding and 982 pounds in Chico — support that will boost local food pantries.  KRCR
  • North Valley Community Food Bank will open a new redistribution center on May 27 from 10 a.m. to noon in Corning — including a ribbon-cutting at 10:30 a.m. at 4928 N. Marguerite Ave. to expand food support for partner agencies.  KRCR

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters contained a one-acre fire sparked by mowing equipment near North Cottonwood School on Monday around 9:13 a.m. — crews from CAL FIRE, Shasta County Fire, Anderson Fire Department, and Cottonwood Fire Protection District responded and later reminded residents to keep extra safety tools on red flag days.  Action News Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Chico rose to $5.95 and in Redding to $5.93 this week, with increases of 4 cents and 1 cent respectively, reflecting recent local fuel cost changes.  Action News Now
  • Indian refiners cut alkylate exports to boost LPG supplies for cooking+ a tighter supply has pushed California gasoline prices to over $6 per gallon. State officials may waive blending requirements to ease price pressure as summer driving increases demand.  Record Searchlight

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Shasta College will hold its 76th commencement ceremony on Friday, May 22 at 7:00 p.m. in Memorial Stadium to honor 1,869 graduates—including transfers, honors recipients, and veterans—and will feature retiring music instructor Dr. Larry Grandy, marking his 48-year career as he delivers the keynote speech.  A News Cafe

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Caltrans District 2 announced Monday that one-way traffic control on Highway 299 near Buckhorn Summit will remain for about three weeks to allow emergency slide repair work. The eastbound lane will close from Wednesday, May 27 (with repairs expected mid-June) and motorists may experience delays up to 15 minutes.  Action News Now
  • Today, UC Davis School of Medicine will present its programs and potential Redding regional branch campus to Shasta County Supervisors, highlighting initiatives for rural & underserved communities. Redding City Council will also discuss offering $80,000 a month in transition funding for Civic Auditorium in its meeting.  KQMS

SPORTS NEWS

  • Today the 2026 Northern Section baseball playoffs continue with Super Regional rounds in divisions II-III and single-elimination games in divisions IV-VI. Games start at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 4 p.m. at local schools including Pleasant Valley and West Valley High Schools — fans can check schedules for division matchups.  Record Searchlight
  • The first round of the Northern Section baseball playoffs ended on Friday, May 15 with wins by teams including Chico, Pleasant Valley and West Valley; losing teams in Divisions II and III now must win two games to advance.   • Redding-area teams Foothill of Division II, West Valley of Division III and U-Prep of Division IV will play today at 4 p.m. in the NSCIF softball first-round playoffs at the higher-ranked teams’ home fields — all games follow a play-in round where each top seed advanced.  Record Searchlight
