COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Shasta County DA's office is collecting food donations for elders during Elder Abuse Awareness Month. Drop-offs are accepted at the West St. office until 5 p.m. M-F and at Save Mart on May 23 and 24 from 8 a.m. to noon.  Record Searchlight
  • Boysen Berry Farm in Orland had an early you-pick season that began on May 9 because warm weather ripened its heritage boysenberries sooner than expected. The farm offered a $1-per-pound coupon and painted rocks for children, and the season is expected to run through early June.  KRCR

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • CAL FIRE firefighters responded on Thursday around 1 p.m. to a quarter acre vegetation fire northwest of Anderson that damaged several outbuildings, with 15 pieces of equipment working to contain the blaze.  Action News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • The seventh annual Redding Roots Revival Music Festival will occur in downtown from Sept. 11 to Sept. 12, featuring a free Community Day on Sept. 11 and a ticketed day on Sept. 12 with acts, food trucks and family activities at Cascade Theatre, Whistle Stop Park + the Paseo.  Record Searchlight
  • The Redding Rodeo grounds (dating back to 1948) blend local history from Shasta Dam construction with rodeo legends, and organizers say planned upgrades will expand its role as a year-round community event venue.  KRCR

  • Cascade Union Elementary School District restored its board quorum by filling two vacancies with new members Jayme Webb and Shelby Stutesman. The board keeps provisional trustee Jackie LaBarbera (appointed in April) until the final seat is filled after further applications by May 29.  ShastaScout

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hamilton City's new temporary post office opens Monday, May 18 at 187 Main Street after a fire destroyed its original site 16 months ago; today is the final day for customers to pick up mail at the current temporary location in Chico.  Action News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • With summer underway, rattlesnakes have been seen on trails and near the Sacramento River, so CDFW experts urge hikers to stick to marked paths, wear sturdy boots, and bring a whistle and phone for emergencies. They stress caution at dawn and dusk.  Record Searchlight
  • Haven Humane Society partnered with Project Homeless Connect on Monday to provide free care in Shasta County, offering more than 130 vaccines + essential supplies like leashes and collars to 77 pets and their families.  KRCR
