COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rodeo Week kicked off today at Mount Shasta Mall with the annual Kiddie Pet Parade where families and their pets paraded in festive, patriotic outfits. The Asphalt Cowboys — who organize several week-long events — hosted kid-friendly competitions with trophies awarded across six costume categories.  Action News Now
  • Redding's McConnell Arboretum and Botanical Gardens now charges non-members with one-day tickets at $10 for adults + $6 for youths and seniors, starting May 1. Admission is collected at the east gate near 844 Sundial Bridge Drive from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Record Searchlight
  • Redding families can save on Turtle Bay's Lantern Festival tickets during a flash sale running May 11-13. Adult tickets cost $15 while kid tickets are $10, and a premium package adds extras to the 10-acre event with live music and food.  KRCR

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Sunday at 12:30 p.m., a fire broke out off I-5 near Cottonwood Hill and was held to about half an acre; fires near Hyampom and off Highway 96 were contained at just over 4 acres and 40 acres respectively.  KQMS

CULTURE NEWS

  • Riverfront Playhouse is selling tickets for its production of Harvey, which opens Thursday, May 14 at 1950 California St and runs through May 31. A pay-what-you-can preview with first-come seating is scheduled for Thursday.  Record Searchlight
  • Tribal casinos are offering a two-week run of comedy, live music and brunch events from May 11 to May 24 with shows in Yreka, Canyonville and nearby areas. One highlight is Don Friesen’s stand-up show on May 21 (8 p.m.) at Rain Rock Casino Resort.  Record Searchlight

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Shasta County Fire Department launched Stay Ready Shasta website on Monday to offer wildfire safety tips and advice for unincorporated areas (the site details a new county ordinance with penalties and a readiness program).  KRCR
  • At a special meeting last week, the Shasta County Board of Education could not reach a majority to fill the vacancy left by former trustee Robert Brown and will leave the seat open until after the November election. Board members split their votes among eight applicants, resulting in a deadlock.  ShastaScout

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sara Stone of the Shasta County Women, Infants and Children program received the 2026 Lactation Impact Award on Saturday for leading the county's Breastfeeding Peer Counselor program (which helped earn the USDA Premier Breastfeeding Award). Local Health and Human Services and WIC offer breastfeeding support through classes and consultations.  Action News Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • The 2026 Northern Section baseball playoffs begin today with play-in games at 4 p.m. for Divisions II and III, as teams vie for seeding in Friday rounds at sites like Pleasant Valley, Foothill, West Valley & Orland. Division II championships are scheduled for May 23 at a neutral location.  Record Searchlight
  • Northern Section high school teams will begin playoff action today as baseball play-in games for Divisions II and III kick off at 4 p.m. and softball teams start final regular-season play at 4:30 p.m. Track, golf, and tennis championships are scheduled later this week (details pending).  Record Searchlight
