- ➤ Redding’s Asphalt Cowboys will host their annual pancake breakfast on May 16 from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m., serving between 20,000 and 30,000 pancakes and 10,000 sausage patties to feed up to 11,000 people—an event that began in 1954 and now funds local programs. Record Searchlight
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Early Thursday, an overturned tractor-trailer crashed just before 3 a.m. in the Sacramento River Canyon off southbound I-5 south of Pollard Flat, leaving debris on the freeway while the driver was unharmed—shortly after 4 a.m., a white sedan rolled over and caught fire on northbound I-5 in Redding near Loma Vista Overcrossing with no driver found. - ➤ Volunteer diver Juan Heredia recovered the submerged body of nine-month-old Oliver Cox from the Trinity River on May 8 — the child's family confirmed his identity. Action News Now
- ➤ Jeffrey Bembry was arrested after he allegedly pointed an AR-15 style assault rifle at a CHP officer during a traffic stop on Interstate 5 Tuesday at the Mountain Gate off-ramp and led a chase that ended near STEM Academy on Oasis Road in Redding — he now faces six felony charges including assault with a semiautomatic firearm and assault weapon possession with court dates set for May 20 and May 22. - ➤ Just before 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, Redding Police reported that 68-year-old Sheila Acker lost control on Hilltop Drive, causing her Cadillac Escalade to crash through a fence and guardrail and plunge onto I-5 where it struck a tractor-trailer driven by 49-year-old Miles Heagy and spilled (46,000 pounds) of vegetable oil; Heagy suffered moderate injuries while Acker, who sustained minor injuries and was extricated from the vehicle, was treated at the hospital and arrested for felony DUI. - ➤ A house on Veda Street in East Redding that has repeatedly drawn police attention was visited by Redding Police and Code Enforcement on Wednesday after being red-tagged for unsafe living conditions, with 20 calls this year for fights+overdoses, robberies and domestic violence. KQMS
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Motorists in Redding should prepare for delays on Churn Creek Road as construction on the Old Alturas Road over Churn Creek Bridge widening resumes on May 12, running weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. until completion before July 31—flaggers and one-way traffic during work hours will guide drivers. - ➤ Today, the Bureau of Reclamation will boost Sacramento River flows from Keswick by raising releases from 8,000 to 14,000 cubic feet per second between midnight and 2 a.m.—Lake Shasta is only about 6 feet from the crest of Shasta Dam—officials said. KQMS
