- ➤ Haven Humane Society in Anderson is offering reduced pet adoption fees from May 1 to May 15 for cats at $10 and dogs at $25—part of a nationwide Empty the Shelters event with the BISSELL Pet Foundation—and aims to help many pets find new homes. Action News Now
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A building that once housed a popular nightspot and had been boarded up since 2012 caught fire around 2:30 a.m. overnight—Redding firefighters contained the blaze from spreading to a nearby printing shop and Moule’s Glass while investigators suspect the fire was human-caused due to disconnected power. - ➤ On Thursday morning, a 2004 Lexus ES330 veered off Highway 299 near Big Flat and crashed into the Trinity River as rescuers used helicopters and drones to search for a 9-month-old child swept away by the current after the fatal crash, while a 21-year-old driver and a 19-year-old passenger from Shasta-Lake sustained injuries. - ➤ A fire destroyed the vacant Bert and Ernie's Bar building on Industrial Street in Redding early this morning, and firefighters deployed seven engines + one ladder truck along with other equipment to control the blaze while Industrial Way stayed closed for about 4 to 5 hours and no injuries were reported. - ➤ Delmar Shulte, a respected pilot with an FAA Air Transport Pilot Rating and designated Pilot Examiner, died in a plane crash in Tehama County near Laurel Way in Bowman south of Cottonwood on Tuesday afternoon—another occupant died at the scene while one person escaped with serious burns and was taken to UC Davis Medical Center as the National Transportation Safety Board began investigating. - ➤ Spencer Reno, a Shasta County man, is set to face trial on 18 charges—including murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and gross vehicular manslaughter—from criminal incidents between March 30th and July 18th, 2024. KRCR
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Melissa Fowler-Bradley, the executive officer of Shasta County Superior Court, retired on May 2 after 17 years in the job and 50 years in public service. She led the court through challenges like COVID-19, wildfires and courthouse construction (the new courthouse opened in February) while case loads increased (14.5% last fiscal year and 4% this fiscal year), with Presiding Judge Tamara Wood praising her leadership.
