COMMUNITY NEWS

  • MAY DAY STRONG is hosting a solidarity cookout at 2225 Benton Drive to bring the community together for food and fun in support of working class values. People can join the event to share a friendly meal + enjoy time with neighbors.  KRCR
  • Families can enjoy the Tehama District Fair from April 30 to May 3 with carnival rides, fair food, and lively events including a destruction derby happening today in Red Bluff. Kids from 4-H and FFA will show their animals and compete in contests on the fairgrounds.  KRCR
  • Haven Humane Society is waiving all adoption fees until May 9 as part of its Empty the Shelters event, and residents can meet adoptable pets at the Morgan Adoption Center in Anderson, the PetSmart kiosk in Redding, or a pop-up at Raising Cane’s (tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.).  Action News Now
  • Redding raised the Children's Memorial Flag on May 1 to honor 95 California children lost to violence & neglect last year, including 2 in Shasta County. Substantiated abuse cases in the county nearly doubled the state average, with almost 3,400 allegations reported to the hotline.  Action News Now
  • Searchers from Tehama and Butte County Sheriff's Offices are looking for 39-year-old Anthony Sterrett from Cohasset (missing for almost three weeks) in Ishi Wilderness.  Action News Now
  • Community volunteers led by Heather Barker rescued two abandoned dachshunds left near Shasta Dam. Volunteers worked for weeks with cameras + food to build trust, and the dogs are now recovering while they await a vet appointment and a permanent home.  Action News Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • California gas prices hit $6 per gallon yesterday because global oil supply issues and refinery closures reduced fuel stocks statewide; Redding drivers say the high prices are worrisome as summer road trips near. Analysts expect costs to rise further with tight supplies.  Record Searchlight

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Cal Fire and Shasta Trinity National Forest crews practiced flying skills near Lake California all week — using air tankers, helicopters and smokejumpers in training exercises to prepare for fire season. The drills sharpened emergency response techniques.  Action News Now
  • CAL FIRE is teaming up with Jefferson Resource Company to start a controlled burn near North Old Stage Road at the base of Mt. Eddy. The project, backed by the Forest Service and the local fire department, aims to lower wildfire risk in the area.  Action News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Redding Fire Department has extended the backyard burning season until further notice, and residents must secure free burn permits online while checking burn days by phone. Officials urge caution as hot weather approaches — use 224-8777 for Shasta and 527-3717 for Tehama.  KQMS
  • Cal Fire required burn permits for yard waste burning (in Butte, Shasta, Trinity, Tehama, Glenn, Modoc and Plumas Counties) to reduce wildfire risk, a measure that went into effect yesterday.  Action News Now
