- ➤ Yesterday, the Shasta County Fire Safe Council and local groups ran a Wildfire Resource Fair to teach residents ways to harden homes and cut vegetation fuels per a county ordinance (from Sept. 2025). Partners including Cal Fire, the Redding Fire Department, PG&E, the Native Plant Society and KIXE shared tips. KRCR

- ➤ A Redding elementary school is on lockdown as police secure the area during an ongoing investigation (all students and faculty are safe). KRCR
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Sundial Film Festival Movie Club will launch on May 7 at IOOF Hall downtown. It will show curated films followed by live discussions led by local film fans and meet twice a month on the first and third Thursday. KRCR
- ➤ A Narnia-themed fair is scheduled for Saturday, May 2 at Caldwell Park in Redding. Hosted by Gregory and Darlene Victoria Alexander-Randolph, the free event offers handmade arts and crafts, artisan vendors, live folk music, and a plein air painting competition — on-site registration is available. - ➤ Gas prices in Redding are now $5.73 per gallon, over a dollar higher than last year according to AAA data from April 29. Drivers preparing for Memorial Day travel should plan ahead and check AAA tips as prices are likely to rise further (with peak travel expected on May 21-22). Record Searchlight
- ➤ A report from ConsumerAffairs found California is the fifth most debt-burdened state, with each resident averaging nearly $88,000 in debt. The analysis used Federal Reserve and Census data and shows the national average debt is about $63,200, indicating higher debt-to-income ratios in California. Record Searchlight

- ➤ Sequoia Middle School hosted the Redding Schools Safety Fair on Wednesday, April 29, where safety organizations, community groups + law enforcement and first responders taught students how to stay safe at school and home. Action News Now
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Aerial firefighting crews from Cal Fire + the Forest Service are training with simulated fire scenarios at the Redding Air Attack Base and over Lake California this week to improve emergency response. Classroom sessions ran last week and practical exercises continue today. KQMS
- ➤ Cal Fire crews train in Tehama County as wildfire season nears today. The unique program, one of only two in the nation, features smokejumping and aerial exercises that draw international participants from Germany + South Wales. KRCR
- ➤ Cal Fire requires burn permits starting Friday for burns in Shasta, Trinity, Tehama, and Glenn Counties; residents must get free permits online (after watching a short video) and call local agencies to confirm burn days as Redding’s pile burning season ends May 1. KQMS
