  • 15-year-old Cade Johnson was honored yesterday at the 9-1-1 Local Heroes Award ceremony on the west steps of the State Capitol for calling 9-1-1 during a violent attack on his family's home on January 11th—even after being shot twice while protecting his five younger siblings—and Assemblywoman Heather Hadwick praised his calm bravery.  KRCR

  • Enterprise High School mourns the loss of senior Alex Pineda (17) who died in a car crash in Seattle on Saturday.  Action News Now
  • Two serious collisions occurred Wednesday on Highway 44—one near Silverbridge Road when a Chevy Suburban struck a Honda at 12:30 p.m. and trapped a person with major injuries, and another near the Shingletown KOA Camp at 5:40 p.m. when an SUV collided with a Ford pickup and left one patient transported by ambulance.  KQMS

CRIME NEWS

  • The family of 21-year-old Athena Passidakis—a Chico State student killed by her ex-boyfriend during an April 3 shooting—is raising $40,000 through a GoFundMe campaign for improvements at Benton Dog Park, including water stations, shaded seating and agility features, to honor her love for animals.  KQMS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Trout season will open Saturday morning at sunrise statewide as state Fish and Wildlife expects near optimal fishing conditions from abundant snowpack and rain. Anglers must follow varying bag limits, size limits, and gear restrictions for local waterways—check rules before heading out.  KQMS

  • On April 30 at 11 a.m., Shasta County Supervisors will interview five candidates for the Registrar of Voters role—one candidate, Clint Curtis, reportedly lacks the required election experience while current Assistant ROV Joanna Francescut brings 16 years of expertise to the table.  ShastaScout

HEALTH NEWS

  • Shasta County leaders ramped up efforts to reduce veteran suicide rates as District Four Supervisor Matt Plummer worked with veterans, county staff and nonprofit Our Heroes Dreams to form a warrior board that will help veterans in crisis—he also coordinated with the sheriff and public defender to offer new options for veterans in the justice system and aims to lower the annual 10 to 15 suicides.  KRCR
  • Dignity Health awarded $499,000 in grants on Thursday to nonprofits in the North State under its Community Health Improvement Grants program—the funds support healthcare services, mental health, food security and housing assistance. In Redding, FaithWorks Community Coalition, Girls Inc. and Shasta Family YMCA received grants to boost programs for high-risk families, teenage girls and youth development.  Action News Now
