COMMUNITY NEWS

  • From April 24 through April 27, Shasta County hosts the City Nature Challenge where community members can use the iNaturalist app to photograph plants, animals, fungi and other wildlife to help scientists track species data.  ShastaScout
  • Kool April Nites events resume despite Tuesday's rain with a weekend car show at the Civic Auditorium featuring 2000 show cars, plus live acts on Wednesday and Friday; however, a small chance of rain could affect Saturday (check forecast).  KQMS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A staged crash behind Durham High School as part of the Every 15 Minutes program gave students a vivid look at the risks of impaired driving. Emergency crews, including a life-flight helicopter, responded after a simulated 911 call, and a mock trial will follow to show legal consequences.  Action News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Redding workers will install rockwads along the Sacramento River near the Redding Rodeo Grounds from April 27 to May 3 to improve habitat for salmon and steelhead. Turtle Bay's boat launch will have limited hours, closing daily at 9 a.m. due to the project.  KRCR
  • Redding Rancheria is hosting an Earth Day event tomorrow (April 24) at Win-River Resort and Casino from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Visitors can explore vendors and receive $5 free play while supporting local businesses.  KRCR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A planned youth behavioral health center in Anderson was cancelled after community concerns led Anderson Community church — a key project partner — to withdraw support for a project that had secured a $25M state grant and county matching funds.  Record Searchlight

  • Two local Shasta Family YMCA athletes were honored as Athletes of the Week for April 12-18. U-Prep's Noah Gaddy won track events (800m, 1600m, 3200m) and his relay team, while Shasta's Kaitlyn Cardin contributed to her softball team.  Record Searchlight
