COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Redding’s Lao, Thai and Cambodian communities will host LTC New Year celebrations at a small Buddhist temple on Rebecca Lane (Sunday, April 19 at 10 a.m.). The event will feature traditional dance, food, and water splashing to wash away old luck.  ShastaScout
  • First 5 Shasta is hosting its Week of the Young Child with engaging events to boost early brain development, and families can check the complete schedule (available at first5shasta.org).  KQMS
  • Emergent Construction is putting final touches on a 3D-printed concrete Emergency Evacuation and Education Center at Haven Humane, designed to shelter 90 dogs + 100 cats and host community classes; a ribbon-cutting is planned in about one month.  KRCR
  • Local bartenders will battle at the second annual Shake Off Cocktail Competition on April 29 at Sacramento River House in Anderson – an event with tastings, live entertainment, and votes for the best cocktail to raise funds for food pantries for local youth. CULTURE NEWS

  • A new 19-foot dragonfly sculpture (Dragon Dancer) was installed in Caldwell Park on Tuesday, Apr. 14 as part of a grant from the Rainforest Art Project, and the lighted steel piece features a mosaic dragonfly on a cattail.  Action News Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • CalPortland announced a temporary workforce reduction of up to 50 jobs effective June 15 amid lower cement demand, though the Redding plant will continue operating normally.  Action News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Anderson Cascade teachers cast a no confidence vote against Superintendent Jason Provence, with 72% of 43 union members expressing their disapproval. Their vote will be shared with board members and a county trustee at Anderson Middle School (6:30 p.m.) today.  Record Searchlight

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Wildlife officials from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife advise residents to let baby deer remain in their natural habitat since fawns are hidden by their mothers to learn survival skills. They ask that people call the department if a fawn looks injured.  KRCR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County-collected property taxes fund local services as Redding received about $29 million from Shasta County’s $253 million collection for 2020-25, and allocations differ by property values and population.  KRCR

  • The Red Bluff Round-Up celebrates 20 years of its Tough Enough to Wear Pink campaign, which raises breast cancer awareness + provides support during the community rodeo this week.  Action News Now

  • Redding held a meet and greet Tuesday to preview the Ironman 70.3 Northern California race coming this summer. Race organizers and city officials said up to 2,500 athletes from 48 states and 11 countries will boost local business and volunteer needs.  Action News Now
