COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the Redding Chamber hosts a meet & greet from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Westside Tap & Cork at 1321 Butte Street off Pine to spark excitement for the Ironman 70.3 triathlon on Aug. 16, featuring a swim at Whiskeytown Lake, biking, and a run with 2,500 athletes.  KQMS
  • The city is building a new disc golf course along Shasta Dam Boulevard behind the Bizz Johnson Baseball Fields and invites residents to submit name ideas (deadline: April 30 at 4 p.m.). The course will be completed this summer.  Action News Now
  • Nick and Nicole Jones, owners of Thrive and Anderson Automotive, launched All Dogs Thrive to offer spay and neuter vouchers that reduce vet costs and shelter overcrowding; the program helped 10 dogs and has 20 more on the waitlist. They foster rescue dogs downtown and seek donations to expand support.  KRCR
  • Hundreds gathered Saturday in Redding for the Suzie Smith Memorial Run — a tribute that raised an estimated $17,000 to honor the late flight nurse who died in a medical helicopter crash in October.  Action News Now

  • Country singer Chase Matthew will perform at Win-River Resort & Casino in Redding on Sunday, April 26 at 7:30 p.m. General admission tickets cost $40 plus fees.  Record Searchlight

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Shasta College is offering free food bags to students as grocery costs rise. The program reduces stigma over food assistance and gives students easy access to essential items.  Record Searchlight

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A tornado touched down Sunday afternoon about 4 miles southeast of Vina in Tehama County and lasted for one minute without causing damage or injuries, according to the National Weather Service which rated it EF-U due to unknown strength.  Action News Now
  • Mushroom season opened in Shasta-Trinity National Forest on April 13 and runs until July 31. Guidelines set a limit of 1 gallon per day and 5 gallons per season, and commercial permits are available — officials advise novices to pick with experienced guidance for safety.  Record Searchlight

SPORTS NEWS

  • High school sports resume this week with league games in baseball, softball, volleyball, track, tennis and golf. Teams including Foothill and Pleasant Valley in baseball and West Valley in softball will compete in key matchups at local fields and Enterprise High School on Saturday, April 18.  Record Searchlight
  • The Anderson Union High School District Board of Trustees will vote on three coaching hires for West Valley athletics tomorrow at 6 p.m. at the school library. Tim Harles is expected to lead varsity football, Justin Byxbe will coach varsity volleyball, and Travis Gurney will take charge of freshman football.  Record Searchlight
