COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A private ceremony was held Friday in Paradise at Hope Plaza on the Skyway to honor the families of 85 Camp Fire victims, featuring a live bagpipe performance and a reading of names (including one unidentified). The public grand opening is today from 1 to 3 p.m.  Action News Now
  • State Department of Fish and Wildlife and Redding Police Community Work Program (with Sheriff's Work Release Crews) cleared trash and invasive vegetation along Hartnell and Bechelli Lane near the Sacramento River today. A City of Redding Parks Crew also helped maintain cleaner waterways.  KQMS
  • The Better in Boots group (started in garages during the pandemic) now offers free weekly line dance classes every Thursday at 6 p.m. at Fall River Brewery to help locals boost their spirits and connect.  KRCR
  • Organizers are preparing for this weekend's Suzie Smith Memorial Run in Redding (in honor of the Shasta County flight nurse killed in a medical helicopter crash last October).  Action News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tomorrow, the poppy festival will feature blacksmith demonstrations + a poppy flower photo station for local visitors in Redding.  Action News Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Officials said spring events will boost tourism and economic activity as Redding hosts Kool April Nites and the Redding Rodeo + additional gatherings to drive hotel stays + raise sales tax revenue.  KRCR
  • CalPortland announced Thursday morning a temporary layoff of 53 employees at its cement plant just north of Redding (effective June 15) due to declining demand, although production will continue and positions will be restored when market conditions improve.  KRCR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • River Partners, a Chico-based nonprofit, is restoring habitat along the Sacramento River near Battle Creek with government agencies & local Tribes. The Rancho Breisgau project in Shasta County is set to finish in 2027 while restoration plans for the purchased Battle Creek Ranch in Tehama County are still in development.  KRCR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The planned 60-bed youth behavioral health facility (set to secure state and county funds) remains uncertain after a key stakeholder withdrew support amid accusations of misrepresentation in grant materials. Local officials are set to discuss updated vetting processes for community-funded projects at an upcoming meeting.  ShastaScout

HEALTH NEWS

  • A conference in Redding brought together Parkinson's patients to share resources and connect with medical experts and vendors (building community for better care) on Friday, Apr. 10. Families benefited from accessing crucial support and information.  Action News Now
