COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Beautify Shasta, a volunteer group in Shasta County, was honored by the state as a Clean California Community for cleaning parks, roads and riverbanks. The honor is part of a $1.2 billion statewide cleanup initiative that adds official signage and support for future efforts.  KRCR
  • Slammin' International, a Redding-born car show, will return to the Redding Dragstrip from 2 to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 18, featuring a new junior dragster race with no engine limits— a first for the event. Organizers promise lively competitions and fast cars for local fans.  KRCR

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • OSPR confirmed that no diesel or oil reached Mill Creek following a tractor-trailer crash along State Route 99E on Tuesday, Apr. 7 — cleanup crews removed spilled fuel and recovery of sawdust remains underway.  KRCR

  • Redding midwife Nora McNeill’s 50-year career was celebrated on March 21 at the Shasta District Fairgrounds, highlighting her role in transforming local birth care from traditional home practices to hospital-supported deliveries (her work empowered families and shaped modern healthcare in the community).  A News Cafe

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jackie LaBarbera, who holds seats on the SCOE and AUHSD boards, faced a legal challenge when Jeff Carr filed a quo warranto (a legal dispute over her right to serve) after her appointment to the CUESD board last week; the Attorney General's office will review her response in coming months.  ShastaScout

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Bureau of Reclamation executed rapid pulse flows on the Sacramento River to aid juvenile Spring-run Chinook Salmon during April and May, with the first pulse occurring Wednesday night (volume increased from 5,000 to 10,000 cubic feet per second); officials advised residents to use caution along the banks.  KQMS

HEALTH NEWS

  • Anderson’s planned youth behavioral health center faces an uncertain future after Anderson Community Church withdrew from the project on April 8. The project, aiming to secure county funds tied to a state grant, was set to offer crisis care, substance use treatment, and transitional housing for youth.  Record Searchlight
  • A new medical provider will begin servicing Shasta County Jail in June—an effort prompted by past high inmate mortality rates. Sheriff Michael Johnson introduced CEO Dr. Kaveh Ofogh at Tuesday’s Board meeting, and the contract costs about $3M more than Wellpath to reduce wrongful death litigation.  KQMS
  • Shasta County Health and Human Services announced the measles outbreak is over after new tests showed the last case was misdiagnosed, meaning all nine patients have recovered and no new infections were reported in April.  ShastaScout

SPORTS NEWS

  • Athletes are training for the Ironman 70.3 triathlon, a 70.3-mile race with a 1.2-mile swim in Whiskeytown, a 56-mile bike ride, and a 13.1-mile run along Sacramento River Trail, set for August 16 in Redding. Organizers expect thousands of participants and an economic boost.  KRCR
  • Two high school athletes from Los Molinos and West Valley were named Shasta Family YMCA Athletes of the Week for their strong play during the week of March 29-April 4 - Los Molinos sophomore August Gilbert shined in basketball and football, while West Valley senior Madison Pemberton excelled in softball.  Record Searchlight
