- ➤ Six-year-old Girl Scout Aria Ogden gathered 24 cases of cookies on Monday, Apr. 6 through the Cookies for Heroes Campaign to support staff at Shasta Regional Medical Center. The donation serves as a thank-you to hospital workers for their service. KRCR
- ➤ Kimmy Gibbler is a young, shy guinea pig at Haven Humane Society’s Adoption Center available for visitors Monday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; she needs a home with plenty of space, cozy hiding spots, and a friend for companionship at an adoption fee of $15. KRCR
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Shasta County Office of Education is accepting nominations for the 2027 Teacher of the Year award until April 23 (submissions must include a signed form, a one-page administrator statement, and two letters), with finalists advancing to the state competition in May. Record Searchlight
- ➤ Shasta College was honored yesterday for its Carbon Sinks composting project that turns food and agricultural waste into rich compost with student help at the campus farm. The project will expand in 2027 to collect campus green waste and offer a non-credit composting class for the community. Record Searchlight
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The US Forest Service is starting a prescribed burn called the McBride Underburn Project today near Mount Shasta to reduce hazardous vegetation before wildfire season. Local roads may be closed temporarily, and residents could see smoke along Everitt Memorial Highway. KRCR
- ➤ A state-funded pilot to bring winter-run Chinook back to ancestral waters is set to lose funding by June, causing layoffs and uncertainty for the Native tribe and local partners (the project returned fish for the first time in 80 years). ShastaScout

- ➤ Health experts warn an obsession with pure eating can lead to serious issues. Eating disorder specialist Becky Fogarty said this fixation may cut out key food groups and social activities — early awareness and support are crucial. KRCR
