  • A concerned community member spotted a 3-year-old poodle in distress in late February and alerted Haven Humane, which began treatment to remove tight, matted fur. The poodle, now renamed Tikvah, was adopted into a loving home and is thriving.  KRCR
  • After rescuing a cat stuck in a truck tire carrier, PID donors paid for its needed care — the cat, named Romac after its equipment maker, now patrols the district building to hunt mice.  Action News Now

  • A downtown bookstore in Redding is updating its search for a new location while a new cafe in The Buzz enjoys brisk business this week.  Record Searchlight

CULTURE NEWS

  • Chico and Redding musicians will host 599 Fest on April 18 and 19, with shows in Redding (Whistle Stop Park and Viva Downtown's IOOF Hall) and Chico (Fab Lab and Maker Radio Stage) featuring 36 local bands from rock to indie-pop. Tickets cost $20 pre-sale and $30 at the door.  KRCR

ECONOMY NEWS

  • WalletHub's March 31 report finds California ranks 11th for overall tax burden at 9.24% as residents pay property + income + sales taxes, placing the state between higher-taxed and lower-taxed peers.  Record Searchlight
  • California drivers paid an average of $5.89 per gallon on April 2 as the high 71-cent state tax and added federal fees drove up pump prices. Fuel costs remain among the highest nationwide compared with other states.  Record Searchlight
  • Mortgage rates have increased steadily over the past five weeks & now average 6.46% for 30-year fixed loans, potentially adding over $100 a month for homebuyers in Redding. Rising costs may also slow local real estate activity as sellers hold off to keep their lower rates.  KRCR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Shasta College opened its 55th Annual Spring Plant Sale on Friday with plants grown by students in native and house varieties that drew hundreds for hands-on horticulture, and the event continues today at the College Farm from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It offers community connection + real world learning.  Action News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Earth Day 2026 will bring cleanups, marches + teach-ins across California from the weekend of April 18 through Earth Day. Redding residents can use an interactive map on EarthDay.org to locate local events that promote environmental progress.  Record Searchlight
  • A raven with a broken wing arrived at Shasta Wildlife Rescue last year and recovered after nearly a month of care before flying away on Thursday, Apr. 2. The bird quickly perched near another as it rejoined the wild.  KRCR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Candidates for California’s District 2 congressional seat spoke at Cascade Theatre last night, answering 100 local voters on topics including immigration, environment and voting rights. Incumbent Jared Huffman promised to keep an office in Redding if elected while new candidates detailed plans for local representation.  ShastaScout

HEALTH NEWS

  • Raising Shasta leaders shared signs of potential child abuse such as unexplained bruising and inconsistent injuries and explained how to report concerns to Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency at 530-225-5144. The nonprofit hosts events for Child Abuse Prevention Month, with its Roaring Rumble fundraiser happening today.  KRCR
