COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A section of the Sacramento River Trail near the Recreation Center and Aquatic Center in Caldwell Park is closed for repairs until Friday while crews fix the damaged segment.  Action News Now

  • The Redding Rodeo upgraded its arena with new electrical systems, service windows, an ADA ramp and removed old bleachers after signing a 25-year lease with the city; it will launch a family-friendly Launch Party and rodeo season set for May 13 to 16 + aims to better serve the community.  Action News Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Redding shoppers face higher grocery bills than the national average as prices for Easter staples vary widely—Safeway’s 10‑lb ham is $8.90 on sale while Kent’s charges nearly $50; USDA data shows food prices rose early in 2026 and are set to increase by 3.6% this year.  Record Searchlight

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three Cascade Union trustees resigned last week after Superintendent Provence offered teachers a 3% raise instead of the board-approved 5%, leaving the board without a quorum & stalling key budget talks amid long-awaited teacher pay increases.  ShastaScout
  • Local high school seniors can earn college funds by applying for a handwritten scholarship at the upcoming Redding Rodeo (applications due April 15) with bonus points for those in FFA, 4-H or fellow rodeo groups; selected applicants will later interview with the rodeo board.  KRCR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fuel break work to protect the Happy Valley area continues this week. Crews burned cleared piles of understory along China Gulch Road (between Richards Way and Sylvan Lane) and smoke is expected through Friday.  KQMS
  • Crews are conducting a prescribed burn in Shasta County to remove piles off China Gulch Road (between Richards Way and Sylvan Lane north of Happy Valley). The controlled burn will continue through Friday.  Action News Now
  • NOAA and US Drought Monitor climatologists reported that Redding might face drought conditions this summer. Residents should stay informed as water supply management may adjust if dry conditions continue.  Record Searchlight
  • The Colby Mountain Fire Lookout near Butte Meadows will reopen in early June, reversing last fall's planned closure — forest officials will work with local communities on fire detection and long-term management.  Action News Now
  • A wet storm will drop up to an inch of rain by Thursday in Redding after a dry March, though forecasters warn that it may not prevent the summer drought or an early fire season. Experts say further dryness could increase fire risk in the area.  Record Searchlight

  • The Redding Regional Airport held a mass-casualty training exercise last Friday to test emergency response for scenarios like a plane crash; local and state responders — including high school volunteers as simulated victims — met FAA guidelines and will review the exercise with involved agencies.  ShastaScout
  • The Redding Police Department told drivers about crosswalk safety rules when Action News Now anchor Hayley Watts reported. Officer Tyler Spurgeon said there are two types of crosswalks drivers must know + follow for safe road-sharing.  Action News Now
