COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Downtown Redding residents and business owners are frustrated with the new parking kiosk system that forces a choice between struggling with the payment process and risking a ticket. Many note the hassle and confusion (as shown in online comments) that comes with the change.  A News Cafe

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A splitboarder suffering from altitude sickness was rescued on Friday, March 20 from Mount Shasta after symptoms worsened above Redbanks and nearby climbers helped him descend—rangers later transported him safely to Bunny Flat.  Action News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Business owners at the Redding Public Market are hosting a Lunar New Year event to celebrate Mien culture on March 29 from 3 to 6 p.m. Attendees can enjoy cultural dancers, red envelope giveaways with discounts, and a weekly prize from Maro Noodle House.  KRCR
  • A Redding family won Best First-Time Filmmaker Award at the Sundial Film Festival on Saturday, March 21 in downtown. The film Wait For the Moon was a family project by sisters Isabel and Keilah Wolk with help from their father and brother and is under consideration for more festivals.  Action News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Shasta County Office of Education announced a student board opening for the 2026-27 school year, inviting high school juniors and seniors to apply by Wednesday, Apr. 2 by email or phone. Applications will be screened on Apr. 15 and interviews held on May 13 (up to two students will be chosen).  Record Searchlight

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • River Partners, a Chico-based nonprofit, is advancing two river corridor projects along Battle Creek between Redding and Red Bluff to boost salmon habitats and wildlife connectivity. The Rancho Breisgau project is set to finish by Oct. 2027 while Battle Creek Ranch remains closed to the public during restoration.  Action News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Redding Regional Airport will host a mass-casualty drill on Friday, Mar. 27 to simulate an emergency for local first responders — airport operations will not be affected.  Record Searchlight
  • At its recent meeting, Shasta County supervisors approved $1.9 million from opioid settlement funds to expand the Pathways to Leadership campus, led by Family Dynamics Resource Center, to secure nearly $25 million in state funding.  KRCR
  • Officials at the county board of supervisors voted 4 to 1 to deny an appeal and move forward with a solar project (covering about 25 acres) near Manton; the planning commission had approved the project despite local concerns, and construction will begin soon with work expected to take about six months.  Action News Now
