BUSINESS NEWS

  • J.D. Power's study from March 19 found Lexus to be the most dependable car brand for 3-year-old vehicles—supporting this trend among California drivers seeking reliable models for long commutes. Toyota, Buick and others also scored high for predictable performance on local roads.  Record Searchlight

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Sundial Film Festival returns tomorrow at Cascade Theatre with 25 films in three screening blocks & a new block dedicated to local movies. Directing partner Tyler Lockamy said the event aims to attract filmmakers and boost local talent in Redding.  KRCR

ECONOMY NEWS

  • HGTV named Redding as the highest ranked California city on its list of the 30 Best Up and Coming Small Cities in America, citing rising wages, job growth and outdoor access. Santa Cruz also earned a spot at number 27 for its coastal lifestyle and growing population.  Record Searchlight

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local swim instructors have written a children’s book to teach water safety in the community. The authors hope the resource will help families learn life-saving tips around water.  Action News Now
  • Four Shasta County students will compete at the state spelling bee after winning local contests; winners include Rhea Little, Max Gumm, Bastian Adams and Roxanne Kidson (contest set for April 25 in Manteca).  Record Searchlight

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Redding is adjusting traffic patterns near the Civic Auditorium as the Turtle Bay to Downtown Gap Completion Project connects the Sacramento River Trail to downtown. The $1.8 million project, funded by state grants & a $100,000 contribution from the Streets Division, will change traffic by mid-April and finish by May.  KRCR
  • The Disaster Loan Outreach Center at Redding City Hall has expanded hours to help Shasta County residents and businesses seeking flood relief from December damage — it operates weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. until April 2nd, when it will close at 4:00 p.m.  KQMS
  • Caltrans will reduce the speed limit from 65 mph to 55 mph on Highway 44 from just east of Airport Road to Millville Plains Road, effective April 2. Traffic studies show that collision rates are lower in the existing 55 zone, supporting the change.  KQMS
  • The Redding Regional Airport will host a mass-casualty incident drill on Friday, March 27 to test emergency response skills — the exercise on the US Forest Service ramp involves local safety agencies, including fire and police, and will simulate a plane crash with no impact on operations.  Action News Now
