- ➤ On Tuesday, March 17, California’s state health official (Rita Nguyen) visited Shasta County to tour local public health operations and meet with leaders on a proposed medical school aimed at improving rural healthcare access; she will link the project with the right state department. KRCR

GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Caltrans permanently reduced the speed limit on State Route 44 from 65 mph to 55 mph effective Thursday, Apr. 2—covering the route from just east of Airport Road in Redding to Shingletown after studies found lower crash rates in the 55 mph zone. KRCR
- ➤ The Bureau of Reclamation is using $40 million from last year’s One Big Beautiful Bill to study raising Shasta Dam and increasing the lake’s capacity by 634,000 acre-feet — the study, which will address environmental concerns and potential impacts on ancestral lands, is set to update plans from 2020. - ➤ Federal funds allocated $540M to upgrade water systems in California’s Central Valley, including improvements to canals and planning for a Shasta Dam expansion (which may increase storage capacity by roughly 634,000 acre-feet) to boost water reliability and drought resilience. Action News Now
